New iPhone...

My cell service provider is offering a $300 trade in against a new
iPhone for iPhone 5's, so, despite my saying I would ignore the 5S, I
made "the jump" earlier today. I was motivated by the fact that my
11-year-old iPod was in the process of giving up the ghost and I thought
a larger memory iPhone would hold the 20 GB of music I like to carry
around. The larger memory capacity iPhone 5S fits the bill. It ended up
costing me $30 out of pocket with my trade-in. Not bad.

The 5S is exactly the same size as the 5, physically, and has a
fingerprint sensor to allow user access. I won't be using that...too
techie for my taste. It supposedly is faster because of a newer
processor, but I haven't had it long enough to notice any differences.

Comes in three colors now...a goldtone, grey-black and silver white. The
latter was the only color in stock.

There are latest model iPhones available that cost no more than other
popular smart phones, and Verizon, at least, doesn't give a damn what
smartphone you have...the cost of service is determine by the package
you want. I got my new iPhone for $30 out of pocket.

You can get a new iPhone 4S for ninety-nine cents with a two year
contract. I think you can get an unlimited talk, unlimited message, and
a GB of data for around $100 a month and that would be the same for any
smart phone you choose. Multiple phones on the same share plan would be
less per phone.

The two year contract requirement doesn't bother me. We've been Verizon
customers for more than 15 years, and have no incentive to switch
carriers. The carriers' plans are pretty much competitive.

You've indicated you have a smartphone with a data package. On a per
line basis, I would guess your costs are about the same as mine.

Nice try, asshole.

For a hundred bucks I get 1450 talk minutes, 1450 messages, and 1.45 gig
of data. It'll take me several month, hell, maybe a year, to use up all
of that.

I use the email and data (file transfers, downloads, et cetera) more
than I use voice. I checked the other day and I am using about 400
minutes of "voice" a month, more or less. That's more than I thought.

The plan I have allows me to "tether" my laptop to my iPhone where there
is no wi-fi available to me. Several of my clients are in financial
services and for various security reasons have no wi-fi in their
offices, and no "guest" wired account access for visitors of any type. I
sometimes have to make adjustments to deliverables at those offices, and
I need internet access to do it.

I am "privileged" (ha!) to have three other cell phone users and one
cell modem user on my account, all relatives (college students) in
distant states. They "share" my unlimited account. Student subsidies! :)
But they are much less expensive on an add a line basis.

Also, I was able to get rid of one of our wired home phone lines, for a
savings of about $60 a month.

Cell services in this country are much more expensive than in many other
countries, just as high speed internet is. We 'Muricans don't seem to
mind being gouged on prices.

But you do seem to have a problem paying taxes. Why is that? Don't you
trust the government to spend your money wisely?

I may not have used that many minutes on the phone (cell or wired) in
my whole life (certainly for the last 20 years). That is 60 days on
the phone if you never hung up.

Of course I think there are people who don't ever hang up these days.
What the hell do they have to talk about?

This past week one of my clients wanted me to write and add an entire
new section to a brochure we are revising. He was leaving for Europe for
a couple of weeks of business travel and we spent nearly three hours on
the phone discussing it and taking notes while he was at his office,
being driven to BWI, and waiting for his plane. That accounted for 175
minutes, according to my call logger (billable hours, you know).

Apparently that is the price you pay when the work you do is cerebral
and doesn't involve banging nails into 2x4's. :)

The messages part intrigues me. I have a nephew in his senior year at
University of Chicago who has maintained a 4.0 average (math major), who
racks up more than 2000 text messages a month, virtually all to his
girlfriend at Cal Tech. She also has a very high GPA. If they go to grad
school, I'm hoping they go to the same one so they can move in together
and communicate in more socially satisfying ways.

I go months at a time that I never even turn my cell phone on.

I doubt I use 10 minutes a month on my wired phone.

When my clients want to reach me, they want to reach me. I can't
offshore customer service to Pakistan. :) I have one long-term client
who suffers from insomnia and occasionally calls me after 11 PM, maybe
once or twice a year.

Thanks to computers, cell phones, email, and the internet, I typically
only have to go to downtown DC or Bal'mer once a week. In the 1980's, I
was downtown four days a week or more.

I use mine a lot for work, but I really don't know why some people need
to be yacking in their car, and worse yet, in a damned store. It ****es
me off when people are clogging up the aisles yammering on their phones.
I was in Quick Trip and a lady had on a full headset, talking away, and
the guy behind the counter told her to take it outside. I loved it!

John, is this senility or have you been diagnosed with some other memory

How often have you come to Don's defense? You keep saying the same things, time after time. Does he

Do you have a memory problem?

Don't answer.

Wozzers Johnny, you really have a splinter or something up your butt lately.
I recommend you apply some of your namesake balm to sooth things down....

Harry's been that way since we've known him. Recall the "My dad"
stories. He still returns to the haunts of his youth, several times a
year, to wax nostalgic.

Apparently Johnny Mop has his youth and that of a previous generation
confused, what with the reference to WW II.

I have some fond memories of my childhood and teen years, some involving

We got sick of trucks taking out our phone lines and they couldn't go

There are latest model iPhones available that cost no more than other
popular smart phones, and Verizon, at least, doesn't give a damn what
smartphone you have...the cost of service is determine by the package
you want. I got my new iPhone for $30 out of pocket.

You can get a new iPhone 4S for ninety-nine cents with a two year
contract. I think you can get an unlimited talk, unlimited message,
and a GB of data for around $100 a month and that would be the same
for any smart phone you choose. Multiple phones on the same share plan
would be less per phone.

The two year contract requirement doesn't bother me. We've been
Verizon customers for more than 15 years, and have no incentive to
switch carriers. The carriers' plans are pretty much competitive.

You've indicated you have a smartphone with a data package. On a per
line basis, I would guess your costs are about the same as mine.

Nice try, asshole.

So the expense of the phone, and service, makes it OK (in your mind) to
pay for that rather than settling up with he people of the US who yo
have screwed?

Few towers are actually owned by a cell phone service provider. Most
are owned by companies who lease blocks of channels to service
providers. One tower may be handling calls via Sprint, Verizon and

I just checked the "coverage map" for Virgin Mobile in my area. It's not
quite up to the "spotty" standard. Apparently there is light coverage on

The 5S is exactly the same size as the 5, physically, and has a
fingerprint sensor to allow user access. I won't be using
that...too
techie for my taste. It supposedly is faster because of a newer
processor, but I haven't had it long enough to notice any
differences.

Comes in three colors now...a goldtone, grey-black and silver
white.
The
latter was the only color in stock.

Oh rats. I just bought my first Android phone. I should have
waited
for this months latest greatest Apple thing-a-ma-jig.
Next week it will be a report about his new top-of-the-line
toaster.
Amazing stuff from a guy who refuses to pay his taxes.

Yup, those of us who are working hard to pay our back debts, can't
afford IPhones... He really should be trying to pay back the
individuals
and small businessmen and women he ripped off in Florida before
he ran
out and hid all of his assets...

Complete bull****... I have a (much cheaper) smart phone Sansung s3
with
unlimited data, text and 1200 mins a month for 45 dollars a month...
You
pay a lot more just for that IPhone service and you know it... If you
went to Verison, you could pay back, er, I mean hide from the Judge,
another 5-600 a year.. But you gotta' have your toy.. we get it....

Ooops, I mean Virgin Mobile.... not Verison..

Some people need a phone that will work when and where they want, not
just near one of Virgin's far flung antennas.

Few towers are actually owned by a cell phone service provider. Most
are owned by companies who lease blocks of channels to service
providers. One tower may be handling calls via Sprint, Verizon and
Virgin Mobile simultaneously.

Well, I am sure I am probably the only one here who lives a lot of their
life away from civilization and towers.. Just the logistics of our sport
puts us out of range lots of times.. harry doesn't go camping in the
bood docks, he just likes his IPhone toy.... My S3 still does everything
my wife's phone does, for a lot less money...

I just checked the "coverage map" for Virgin Mobile in my area. It's not
quite up to the "spotty" standard. Apparently there is light coverage on
one side of the main north-side highway and virtually none on the other
side.

Doesn't surprise me. Verizon can afford to lease many blocks of
channels on many towers. A small provider like Virgin Mobile can't.

I never have trouble in civilization.. There are three tracks we know of
however where Verison works, and VM doesn't... But again, harry doesn't
spend time outside like that, he just is trying to justify an 800 dollar
toy, with a 30 dollar a month extra charge, just for the "I"...snerk
