I am not the programmer, my wife is and her "team" from years ago did a lot of pretty cool stuff back when on line merchandizing was coming into being.... And as to registering and securing, we did just such a database for Prudential Personnel Services, over a decade ago. Ultimate security as it was a HR type service which rated White Collar Employees, thousands of users would hit it at once and expect queried results, in minutes...... that project was myself, my wife, and a crazy programmer named only "mr moon"... :) So, maybe "Scotty" and co are capable of a bit more than you might think....:) Besides, like I said before... All the code is out there now, just have to compile it and make it work together.... A HS senior with a couple nerds and some time could do it... |

Lots of the PC based data collection and display was done in Visual Basic, but there was a hell of a lot of C+ programming behind the display code. And the displays on the systems, took several people and a few hundred thousand in wages and equipment to develop. |

It worked well for me. For the last few years, though, I have been running a Synology server that at the moment has four two terabyte drives, and probably has more capability than anything you actually have in your physical possession. I use it to backup our various computers, as a media server for video and music, as the device on which I run our home security system, as a test bed server for web pages I design and maintain, as a photo server for our relatives and friends, et cetera. The web interface I use to run everything is Linux-based. |

Our public website is a billboard... Most of the hard core "design" we did in the past revolved around making different systems and languages "talk" to each other... Here's the deal.. If you understand that most of the problem with the ACA website was that too many different companies "shared the wealth".. (Probably half the money went to the paperwork you need to fill out to write a website for a local college for **** sake....) The problem was, too many companies, with different operating proceedures and structures for building a site, it was a case of "too many cooks spoil the broth". If one company had taken a team and written the thing, I still submit it could be done for a million or two.... probably less... You just have to get by the source here, and look at the facts... The fact is, the project was so splintered, it never stood a chance... That is so stupid it's beyond belief!! Just what you describe is done all of the time, all over the world! Not stupid beyond belief. Is why we have a lot of bloated bad software. Write a " hello, world " program for windows and just see how big the program is. All the class defining, windows subroutine calling. Why you now require a gigahertz speed, terabyte drive to run a home computer and get any throughput. |

Writing the software could maybe done for a million, but the testing and verification would take a lot more money and time. Was a problem with UNIX for years. Lots of the drivers were written as college papers. They did not handle exceptions well, if at all. Those are harder to test. |
