We don't need a draft. I don't know if this is still true or not,
but there were two German Navy types in one of the schools I attended.
At the time Germany had a mandatory, 2 year military service
requirement for all able bodied men between certain ages that I can't
recall.
They could postpone service while attending university, but were
required to serve immediately following graduation.

I wouldn't be opposed to something similar in the USA. Either a two
year stint in the military or some other service like the Peace Corps.
No exceptions for family connections, social status or for being the
offspring of a politician in Wash DC.
