Default Fender slime/goo

I just (sigh) pulled my boat for the season. In doing so,
I noticed that some of my fenders and my anchor ball are covered
with a very sticky goo...NOTE this is not the green/brown slime that typically
washes off with a a brush and some form of acid ( eg "ON and OFF" ).
but it is as if the fenders are slowly melting. Has anyone else had this
type of problem? My boat is kept in the Merrimack River in northern Mass.
It is not as if the river is as toxic as it used to be.

I made the mistake of cleaning some goop off the top of one of my fenders
with Fantastic or something like that (can't remember exactly) and although
it now appears clean(er), it is permanently sticky. Almost like I dissolved
the top layer of plastic and it won't restabilize.

Could you somehow have gotten something like that on it?

Maybe...but I don't really clean them. The worst ones
are the orange/red buoys. You describe the symptom well; it
is as if the plastic melted and has stayed in the melted state.
Don't know what to do about it.

===================================

I've had this happen to older fenders and attributed it to solar UV
damage but don't know for sure. The only cure I know is fabric covers
or chucking them out, otherwise they will leave residue on the boat.

If the fenders get sticky, it's either from chemical exposure, usually to
some type of solvent, or UV degradation (they're at the end of their life if
that happens). I really don't think Fantastic would do that.
