You're quite the drama queen, eh? Besides Maryland is no paradise...

The travails of Sheila Dixon and Ulysses Currie are just the latest in a long line of Maryland political scandals. Here are some of the more recent and memorable scandals.

1973Then Vice-President Spiro Agnew, pleads nolo contendre (no contest) to tax evasion and bribery during his days as Governor of Maryland.

1977Governor Marvin Mandel was convicted of mail fraud and racketeering. He served 19 months in prison. Ronald Reagan commuted his sentence in 1987, and one year later the US Court of Appeals overturned his conviction.

1983Prince Georges County State Senator Tommie Broadwater is convicted of food stamp fraud.

1998Montgomery County Planning Board Member Ruthann Aron is convicted of contracting a hit man to kill her husband and a lawyer.

1998The General Assembly expels Senator Larry Young, even though he was acquitted of corruption charges.

2005Baltimore County State Senator Tommy Bromwell pleads guilty to bribery, falsifying a tax return, and racketeering.

Earlier on I stipulated that no state's or country's political system

snore... saying it over and over doesn't make it true.

Certainly Agnew, Mandel, et al, were personally corrupt, but I don't

think any of the pols you named were as much of a political whore as

your own Lindsay Graham, eh?

Of course they are. You just think his sins are more grievous because of the side of the aisle he's on.

They were all white guys and more than a few were corrupt.

You don't have to be a woman politician to not be anti-woman, or a black
politician to not be anti-black. Further, I don't expect all the players
in our political system to be pure as the driven snow in corruption.
Maryland is not particularly backwards, racist, anti-government,
anti-woman, or anti voters' rights.

I am not convinced the people of South Carolina are any more racist
than the people in Southern Md, particularly the ones who were part of
the white flight from DC. The only kkk rally I ever saw was in
Southern PG county.

The most racist people I have ever seen as a group, are northern, big
city, cops.

I live in Southern Maryland, and have for a decade. A good number of the
most illustrious people here are the descendents of 18th and 19th
Century blacks, mostly farmers, and some of them are still farmers.
There are any number of roads here named after black families. There are
black kids on our street, and black kids in the schools, and black kids
working in the stores after school. Two of my doctors are local blacks.
I think about 15% of the local population is black and about 4% is Latino.

I'm not claiming there is no racism here. I am sure we have some white
racist pigs amongst us. They're everywhere. But at least the racism here
isn't institutional and on-going, as it is in South Carolina. No one in
Calvert County would dare to **** around with easy voter registration
and short-line voting.

I haven't had much to do with "northern, big city, cops."

There's still black farmers in South Carolina, and that's a pretty
stupid point to make! There are a number of roads in South Carolina
named after black families, There are black kids on a lot of streets in
South Carolina, and in the schools. And black kids working in the stores
after school. So what IS your point?

I've already explained the point several times. It has to do with South
Carolina (and Texas, recalling the first post I made in the thread)
being institutionally backwards, racist, anti-government, anti-woman,
anti voters' rights.

The comment about farmers was in response to Greg's post.

Hey, I know it is difficult for some here to follow along. It's not my
problem, nor do I much care one way or the other.

A black friend who grew up in a small town here in SC, was in the Air Force, and travels extensively for work tells me that he runs into racism far more in other parts of our country than he does here in SC. One of the reasons seems to be that a larger percentage of our population is black, and we have learned to get along better than other places with few blacks, or highly segregated neighborhoods.

These folks that think southern states are still highly racist are living in the past. We have moved on more than many northern states.

As I said, for you, politics trumps compassion. You want to think you're hurting those state governments. You don't give a damn about the people and communities struggling to make it, depending on the very businesses you don't patronize.

It defines you. A smug, arrogant, and shortsighted liberal.

Naw....he's just a ****ing asshole. No one knows about, nor cares about Harry Krause. He just THINKS they do
