Anyone who joins the NRA right now is a friggin' idiot. If there was
ever an organization that had gone awry, this is it. Depending on the
poll, between 70 and 90% of the American people want mandated
background checks on all gun sales and yet the NRA vehemently opposes.

I venture to guess that many members will cancel or allow their
memberships to lapse after this round of stupid lunacy.

-------------------------------------------

It's not the members. 74% of the NRA membership support universal
background checks. The nut case is Wayne LaPierre who happens to get
all the media publicity. BTW ... he's not even the President of the
NRA. He performs the roll of CEO and is the national spokesman and
loud mouth. Problem is he doesn't present membership views ... only
his own.

Please provide an objective source for your "74% of the NRA membership support universal
backgroud checks."

As often said, "Don't judge a book by it's cover".

Verify the sources before believing. Trust but verify.

I am beyond disgusted with the group of Republicans who refuse to even
hold a simple vote and are threatening to filibuster any gun control
bill. They are claiming that the Democrats might try to sneak in a
couple of amendments that they couldn't support, so therefore no
vote.

Why don't you and others propose a constitutional amendment that will detail the changes you
wish to make and get it passed through the amendment process.

Can't they read? If they don't like the bill vote no. But at least
do your jobs and vote.

The Senators who are threatening a filibuster now are no different than the Senators who
threatened a filibuster over judicial nominations. The knife cuts both ways.

I wonder why, if the members themselves are overwhelmingly okay with

it's
the politicians as usual getting in the way.

-------------------------------------------

I am not a NRA member, so I don't know. I am sure the gun
manufacturers have influence and so do some of the politicians that
represent hard core "red" states. They can defend the right to high
capacity magazines, "assault" type guns, etc., and although I
personally don't see any need for them, I can at least understand
their arguments. But a background check to purchase a gun? That
should be a no-brainer.

I think the goal is to block any legislation that the current
administration is pushing. I might be wrong.

---------------------------------------------

That's not the job they were elected and are paid to do. Vote NO if
you must .... but vote.
All they are doing is protecting their own asses so come election time
they can get re-elected.
I think it's going to backfire on them this time. Even those who are
usually hard to starboard are disgusted.
(notice the boating content?)

It sure is the job they were elected to do. They were elected to represent their constituency
and they are duty bound to use any and all legislative tools available to do that.

The really sad thing is that the greater media is not out in force supporting the Fox
correspondent who is threatened with jail in reporting on the Colorado shooting incident. It
appears that as long as the general media's preferred candidate is holding the presidencey
they are ok with having the rights of their opposition media outlets threatend.

I fail to see what it has to do with background checks to purchase a
gun in 2013.

Things have changed a bit since 1788 and changes to laws are sometimes
required. For example, I'd like to see a uniform travel law
established for permitted, legal gun owners. There's no Federal law
restricting inter-state travel but each state has it's own set of
rules and reciprocity agreements. I can't travel from MA to SC to
visit my son with a gun in my car without violating the law in several
states. In many ways I think traveling down RT 95 through New York,
New Jersey, and other areas south is probably more dangerous than some
war zones if you happen to be forced to stop in the wrong places.

Not objective.

Nearly three quarters (74 percent) of NRA members supported requiring a background check
system ?for all gun sales? in a January online survey by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School
of Public Health (respondents were recruited offline using a probability sampling method).

This poll is suspect on its face.

As I alluded to in my reply, I suspect *any* study or poll that
doesn't support your point of view is "suspect".
Doesn't matter. You are free to believe what you want to believe as

They also sell various other items, holsters, etc, etc, and even books for those who need to learn
more about the use of weapons and, especially, safeties. Their concealed carry book would probably
provide the answers to those 'special circumstances' you may encounter!

I'd bet more than 90% would like background checks if we could get the
gang-bangers to comply.

Should be if you ignore the obvious... but it's been brought up before
here so.....

-----------------------------------------

Your right. The hard core right have no brains. Neither does the
hard core left.

I think it depends on the definition of hard-core left. If you mean
people who put nails in trees, then yes. If you mean actual
socialists, then no.
