I don't like driving long distances. We visit Florida a few times a year
for various reasons, and most of the time we either fly or take the
train. The drive isn't bad if we break it up and spend the night in a
motel somewhere, but driving straight through is not something we enjoy.
I've had trips to Minnesota, the Dakotas, Wyoming and Montana, and there
are plenty of beautiful places, but I've never felt the need to drive
there to get to them when I can fly there and rent a car. To each his own.

We always fly and rent a car somewhere along the route we want to take
on the driving part. Sometimes it is a loop, other times we fly back
from a different place.

The airlines have complicated flying so much these days, it isn't that
easy to "fly back from a different place." We flew to Ft. Lauderdale
last year to see friends and also wanted to see friends up between
Daytona and Orlando, and arranging a "round trip" returning from Orlando
was a colossal pain in the ass, cash outlay wise.

Have you seen the sites in southern Utah yet?

We were up here a ways on the Arizona New Mexico trip.
Bryce Canyon and Zion

Two of the best. Our next big, i.e., longer than a week or so,
will probably be to Yellowstone and
Grand Teton, with sightseeing in between. Maybe next year. This
year's getting booked pretty solid.

It must be a real drag pulling that luxurious 5th wheel all over the
countryside and seeing all those marvelous sites while enjoying all
the
creature comforts and not having to deal with suitcases.

Ever think of sandwiching yourself into an airplane between two fat
smelly people and doing a flyover instead?

Been there, done that, it sucks!

My wife is the navigator. She's got the little ipad or pod or
whatever the hell it is that connects
to the internet while we're traveling. She also bought a book
called, "Next Exit" which is a great
source of info while traveling on the interstates. The trailer we
bought is nice in that everything
can be used without using the slideouts. That was one of the main
criteria in choosing it. Many of
the floor pans don't allow access to refer's, stoves, sinks,
couches, etc. when the slides are in.
That means 'setting up' to spend the night somewhere. We can pull in
to a 'Flying J' and spend the
night with all the comforts - and it's free!

I was in Chicago for a few days last week. It's about 750 miles from
here and is at least a 12 hour drive through Pennsylvania, Ohio, and
Indiana, along routes best "flown over." Blech. Took a jet, had aisle
seat both ways.

Hour and a half flight each way. Plus an hour arrival early at the
airport. No luggage wait, since I used a carry-on bag.

Got a meeting coming up in Seattle later this year. 2800 miles. At least
two days worth of driving if you don't stop for very long. No thanks.

To each his own.

A trailer is not the thing to take on jobs. Flying to Seattle for a
meeting sounds like the planners
have their heads up their butts. Do it over Skype. My wife does a lot
of conference calling and
meeting attendance from home using software provided by the company
she's consulting for.

Skype is ok. I use it with one of my programmer sources, who lives in
India. Sometimes, though, you just "gotta be there." Besides, I like
visiting the Left Coast, though the long flights are not something I enjoy.

Are all of your decisions made specifically to please you personally?
Seems most of your ideals are based on that "me" mentality...

WTF? Should he NOT like going to the left coast just because you either
don't like it, or can't afford it?

Yeah, Kansas can get dull, so go thru Minnesota and North Dakota and Wyoming instead. I've

North Dakota can get pretty boring too if you just drive 80 looking
out the window. You have to get out and look around.

This is your vacation. Get off the extra few bucks and fly first
class.
They don't screw with you about your bags, you have a quick line
through ticketing and security and they treat you a lot nicer on the
plane. Oh and you can change your ticket or even get your money back.

It is like what flying used to be 40 years ago, inflation adjusted,
about the same price.

I used to fly several times a week. On occasion I got bumped to FC. To
me, it isn't worth the extra cost. Flying ain't what it used to be. I
dread the prospect of ever having to fly again. But, of course, to each
his own. That's what I've been preaching to Harry lately.

Whether first class or coach, I hate flying. During a one-year assignment to Korea I made the round
trip four times. That's enough.

Some of the biggest advantages to first class come before you get to
the plane. We pack pretty heavy and it is nice not having to worry
about heavy bag fees, too many bag fees etc.
I take a big duffel bag and a cooler, my wife takes 2 bags. Coming
home we might have 1 or 2 more "something"

I don't need a cooler. I bring a full size residential style
refrigerator with me when I travel and we have an 8 ft long full sized
closet. To each his own. ;-)

If I was going on vacation within a day's drive, I would but when I am
going out west I do not want to be driving for 4 or 5 days each way.
It takes a long day's drive, just to get out of Florida. I am 650
miles from the Alabama state line. Going straight north to Georgia is
well over 300.

It's not the destination, it's the journey, is the way I look at it.

Using your example, I might stop at Sarasota, Tampa/Clearwater, look up
Frogwatch, Destin, Pensacola, gulf beaches, on my way to the Alabama
state line. Or if you were heading to Georgia you might want to visit
some theme parks and St Augustine along the way.

But to each his own. Right?

One of my most memorable trips was an impulsive drive from MA to
Denver Colorado to pickup a vintage '55 Ford F-100 that a guy had for
sale.
I drove the F-350 diesel I had at the time towing a car trailer.
Travelled alone, lots of things to see and time to reflect on stuff in
general.
Great trip. I think I turned the steering wheel very slightly two or
three times while in Nebraska.

I have been to all of those places. We like to see new places

Can't find new places if you fly over top of them.
