A leading supermarket chain in New England began recruiting *scabs* on
a
large scale this week as the union representing some 40,000 of its
workers girds for a potential strike later this month.Stop & Shop,
with
more than 250 grocery stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode
Island
and New Hampshire, opened 14 recruitment sites across the region with
the goal of hiring “replacement workers,” confirms company spokeswoman
Suzi Robinson. The recruits would replace members of five local units
of
the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) union in the event of a
strike or lockout on February 24, when current collective bargaining
agreements expire.

-------------------------------------------------------

Curious. What type of specialized training or apprenticeships are
required to be a union worker in a supermarket?

What a hell kind of question is that? What's specialized training have
to do with supporting workers rights??? You do know that's what unions
do right?

-----------------------------------------------------

Because we've been lectured for years here in this newsgroup about how
only union workers are truly qualified and competent for the work that
they perform. Non-union labor is substandard in the eyes of some. So, I
am curious as to the special skill sets of union supermarket employees.

The efforts of the right to treat workers as nothing more than a
disposable commodity...continue.

Among the more highly trained and skilled employees of supermarkets:
butchers, tractor-trailer drivers, environmental engineers, plumbers,
electricians, carpenters, et cetera. The training required to run a cash
register is minimal.

The primary purpose of a labor union is to improve the wages, hours,
working conditions, and benefits of its members. One benefit you derive:
most unionized supermarket employees have a sick leave policy, so that a
worker with the flu isn't sneezing all over your produce.

Some unions, especially in the skilled construction unions, provide
extensive training to apprentices and members.

Interestingly, we have large unionized and non-unionized chain
supermarkets in the DC area. They all tend to charge the same prices for
food. The non-union supermarkets tend to be marginal in their
operations. The Wal-Mart grocery operations tend to be cited a lot more
for various fresh food violations. I wonder why.

It was the striking and demonstrating members of the meatcutters union
in Chicago in the 1880s who gave us what became the eight hour day.

There are two major supermarkets in my area, one is union and the other
is non-union. The kids, 16 to 18, don't want to work at the union store
due to the fact that even if they don't work during the course of a week
they are still obligated to pay their union dues. The major difference
between the two stores is that the unionized one has higher prices for
their goods than the non-unionized one.

The question becomes what special skill set does a 16 year old union
member posses in order to enable them to stock a shelf and run a cash
register. Presumably the union supermarket job requires more skill than
doing the same thing at the non-union supermarket and McDonald's.

Of course the union store requires more skill. It takes real skills to game the system in order to work less for more pay.

Are the people actually making more money? The government takes their
cut, the union takes their cut and pretty soon everyone is making
minimum wage.

Please forgive me for snickering all over your union grocer post.
Anyone who shops for groceries can't help but notice that the union
grocers charge significantly more for their goods. They have to. Unions
drive up the cost of doing business in many ways, not just wages.
As far as safe fruits and vegetables goes, it is known that washing them
in a clean sink, not the disgusting one in your famous coffee maker
photos, gets rid of most of the unhealthy and unsanitary elements.

Scotty's not a scab!!! That would entail actually working, and he's just
a lazy non-provider.

Ain't that a shame. I wonder how many of those union guys and gals will
jump ship.

Good to see another bunch of parasites out of work... I am sure the guys
who come in will be happy to give a days work for a days pay. Unions
call them scabs, but hey, they are unions:) LOL!

What's your excuse for being unemployed and proud of it?

I dunno'. Folks like harry flock to unions so they don't have to work...

This from the unemployed non-provider.

Yeah, like those "parasites" who build Navy ships. What a dumb****.

You're catching on, Scotty doesn't care how stupid he comes off here as
long as he comes and repeats what O'Reilly told him on FOX!

What's you excuse for lying? What do you do, damn, maybe I should write
back to that little kid who asked me to replace her burnt shirt last
fall and see what her daddy does during the day while he's lying his
bitch ass off here??
