bridges, etc. not that doesn't mean they're not also trained in
fighting. Don't personally know, but with a bit of speculation, I'd
say John 'probably' didn't kill anybody.

but "Combat" [usually] isn't in the picture that is unless the orders
are specified. At least that's what I gather.

Nope, all engineers in a Combat Engineer Battalion are 'combat' engineers. The Combat Arms are the
Infantry, Artillery, Armor, and Engineers. (Of course, that could have changed in the past 20
years.)
