they need protection, so they join gangs. It's a vicious circle that
wouldn't exist if they didn't have the stupid "war on drugs".

diluted the quality and increased the price as most of the better
growers sell to private folks in smaller circles, and are not interested
in screwing with the tax man... or the crime/attention that surrounds

part of the economy in those areas. Most of this money is in heroin,

from Mexico. It is also very expensive. The government tacks on a tax
of around $50 an oz. ($400 an oz is not uncommon). I did not partake
when I was there a couple years ago. (No RX card)

That is the problem. Our economy is tried too closely to the
government. When the country had it's periods of the highest growth,
the government was a fraction of the percentage of GDP that it is now.

Virtually all of the decisions that have degraded our 4th and 5th
amendment rights, came from the drug war, not the terror war.
(unwarranted car searches, stop and frisk policies and civil
forfeiture where your property is the criminal, with no rights to a
defense)
They also use unwarranted taps, not to develop a court case, just to
"get lucky" on one of those warrantless searches.

This also swells the prison population to the point that the US has
the highest incarceration rate of any other democracy in the world.

What threatens are liberty and all the folks who want to gut social
programs in the name of a made up debt problem.
