Anyone have a better idea than this for a target stand to take to the range?

The outdoor range I use has pistol bays with tall sand berms on three sides.. I just use a rectangular wooden frame with long legs that I push down into the berm. I staple cardboard onto the frame, and use some of those peel-n-stick orange target dots. It's bigger than your linked target, so I can place 4 dots on it and that way I don't have replace the cardboard as often. |

Get yourself a steel target stand, maybe from Brownell's. Ahh, I remember the days we whittled "Ol Stumpy" down from a 4' tall stump to, well, nothing. Now, where he "sat," there's a drain field. |

If you have a permanent site, the best strategy is to sink a pair of 3 inch PVC pipes into the ground with a post hole digger. |

Sure, I would go with the mortar mix and just fill the base tubes. Bring a couple extra empty upright tubes in case something were to go haywire and you splattered one:) I think you are dead on with your design in my opinion. |

You can fill the bottom with sande or water to keep it in place when there is a bit of wind. If he fills sections of tube with something solid, or seals the ends of a couple of the base tubes with sand inside, he can break it down and carry it in his bag without filling and un-filling the base... That's the plan. Small bag of mortar mix ought to work well. I'll just fill the bottom 'feet', but leave them unglued so I can disassemble them easily. Salmonbait -- 'Name-calling'...the liberals' answer to a lost argument! You know you live in a Country run by idiots if... You have to have your parents signature to go on a school field trip but not to get an abortion. The only issue I see is getting the mortar plugs to not shrink when setting and fall out.. Might have to put a screw or a dowel through the side of the pipe before or after setting the mortar?? Um, how about non-shrink grout....... Just be sure to rough the surface of the pvc so the goo will form a mechanical bond.. |

Another option would be a caulk gun size tube of bathroom silicone, again, rough the inside of the tube with 80 grit or even a saw blade, razor etc.. don't be afraid to disrupt the surface well, no one will see it... |

Good thought though. I'd not have considered it until the mortar fell out at the range with everyone watching! What ranges will you be using this at? What I am asking is at the range you are shooting at, is there a chance of blowing the hell out of your stand? I like that idea and may build one myself. Salmonbait -- 'Name-calling'...the liberals' answer to a lost argument! You know you live in a Country run by idiots if... You have to have your parents signature to go on a school field trip but not to get an abortion. I *was* going to use it at the Marine Corps Base Quantico firing range - an outdoor range. Today I cancelled the membership there because the available shooting times are just too limited. Hell, I could drive down there only to wait several hours and never get on. When you say 'blowing the hell out of your stand', I'm not sure what you mean. The uprights on the stand, as shown, would come up about 16". Then a wooden slat would be stuck in each side. The cardboard silhouette would be stapled to the slats, and the actual pistol target (or rifle, whatever) would be stapled to the cardboard. The PVC stand, unless one is a *really* poor shot, should last a long time. Salmonbait -- 'Name-calling'...the liberals' answer to a lost argument! You know you live in a Country run by idiots if... Yeah, a bunch of things would work. But, see above. Don't need it anymore. Although - I've a friend who has a small (20 acre) plot of land out in the country and just got a ..45. He offered to let me shoot on his place. Maybe I'll make him a stand just for letting me do so. That would be much better than shooting at stumps.
