The first depicts a town in Italy in which Ms. Loren works at an illegal job selling bootleg cigarettes. Under Italian law of that day, she cannot be arrested so long as she is pregnant, or within a six months of giving birth. So, naturally, her husband in the movie, Mastroianni, works very hard at keeping her pregnant. Your comment about our boy Snotty and a "job for life" reminded me of that movie.
