My sister just got a used sail boat boat and the markings on the rope
clutches/spinlock are worn badly and she would like to use some type of
label maker to re-label them. Is this feasible? Any suggestions would be
greatly appriciated. I was thinking of having small plates made at a sign
shop.

Dymotape (embossed plastic labelling tape), carefully applied to a
cleaned smooth surface will work just fine for the relatively short time
it will take to get to know the lines without having to read labels
(called 'learning the ropes').

I've seen old faded Dymo labels hanging on grimly for two or three
years.

Dymo worked well for us. Been on for over 15 years, although the clutches
are under the dodger.

If you know your boat, you should no have to read labels. You should be
able to function when visually impaired (night or heavy rain). I learned my
unmarked clutches quick and communicate to others by using terms like Port--
outer, center, inner. There is no mistake. If the label peels off with out
your knowledge, your novices on board won't undertand your instruction when
you tell them to release the reefing line.

And as the light fades, the red and orange are indistinguishable from
each other. And even more fading of light and all lines look alike!

I just returned from a 2 day trip with a crew who had to be reminded to
just read the label on top of the clutch to find the line I needed
trimmed or eased. This was a daylight trip. If we had sailed in the
dark the labels would have been of little help unless he held a
flashlight in his teeth.

The previously mentioned tip of knowing your lines well enough to count
them out (port outer, starboard middle, etc) by hand or instruct the
crew which one to use based on the same physical location description
(trim the mainsheet, it's the starboard outside line), seems to be the
best way to go.

I've also found that if you walk your crew through the steps of
following the lines to see where they go and what they do during
pre-sail, they are much more relaxed under way when asked to do something.

The 'new style' labelers like dymo and brother work well.
The tape stands up to the sun and weather fairly well.
I put labels on my boat 3 summers ago and they are still firmly affixed and
readable.
The labelers are about $25 at office supply stores.

We use a small hand label maker that embosses the letters on a srip of
colored plastic that has an adhesive backing. The width of the strip fits
nicely on top of the Lewmar stops. Every so often the adhesive lets go, so
we just reglue with any weatherproof glue.
