I do the same when I lease a car. IIRC it was a maximum of $5,000.

I tried to put my Honda on my AmEx card. The guy gave me the regular
"I have to talk to the boss" thing and when he came back, the price
was 5% higher.
I took the original price and wrote him a personal check.
They sent me on my way in my Honda.

He said they would have let me use the CC for free if I was financing
there and I was only putting the processing and down payment on the
card.

Did AmEx give a rebate? If so it may have paid to put a big down payment and the processing thereon.
