How many times have you qualified with a .45, Harry?

I'm just a range shooter, John. I've never shot any Vietnamese
people.
I've found the CZ's to be more accurate in 9mm and .45 ACP
than the run
of the mill 1911's.

The military still like the.45ACP.They just ordered a couple
million
dollars worth of them

They ordered the HK Mk23 tho I imagine. That is what the special
ops
guys carry

No, actually Gregg, it's the return of the 1911 Colt.only modified.

The M45

http://militarytimes.com/blogs/gears...c-orders-4036-...

I am surprised they are going with the SA 1911. The only way it is
useful in combat is in condition 1.

OK, Gregg, I'll bite....What is 'condition 1'?

There's a round in the pipe, the mag is in place, the hammer is cocked,
and the safety is on. All you have to do to fire is thumb the safety
off
and pull the trigger. Obviously Condition One presumes your pistol
has a
safety.

I'm not sure what "condition" Glocks are in with a round in the
chamber,
the mag in place and the slide cycled. There is no safety. I guess you
could call it "Condition Shoot Yourself in the Foot."

Surprised you don't know this, since you "qualified" with a pistol
"about a dozen times." What was your qualification about? Didn't it
include safe handling?

Harry, to "qualify" with a side arm, you don't have to know a thing
about it,with the exception of pulling the trigger and hitting the
target.

You'd better be able to clean it also. Most armorers get ****ed when a
dirty weapon is turned in.

Harry's just being his usual.

Naw. Just surprised that in your many qualifications, you apparently
weren't taught much about pistols. The most basic safety course at a
good range includes a discussion of "conditions" as they relate to
semi-auto pistols.

You would have made a M-a-r-v-e-l-o-u-s soldier, even if you were
relegated to a job in the company clerk's office.

Harry goes off half-cocked all of the time, he would make a great crazy
person.

How many times have you qualified with a .45, Harry?

I'm taking my 85 year old dad to the shooting range next week to shoot some pistols. One we'll take is a 1911 that he hand built. Match grade barrel, adjustable trigger, etc. Very accurate. The military grade ones are puposefully set up "loose", they rattle when you shake them, but it's on purpose so they don't jam with a grain of sand. This one is tight and more accurate, and is sweet! He's been promising it to me for years, but I'm in no hurry for it. I hope

he gets to shoot for sor many more years before it passes to me.

I've been reloading some lately, and need to burn through some .38's that are reloads I don't like. I'll load them back up with something better. Reloading make the .45 much more reasonable to shoot at the range as well! The 9mm Makarov is super cheap when you buy in 500 round quantities, and good for plinking.

My brother's trying to talk me out of the Colt .45 idea and into a Browning Hi Power 9mm. He's got
me thinking about it, that's for sure - especially when the cost of ammo comes up. How much would it
take to get started in the reloading process?

Are you looking for CC? If so, something other than the Colt is
advisable unless you are a really big guy in baggy clothing.

I'd go with the .40 rather than a 9mm.

I've been reloading for many, many years. The initial costs are a bit
steep, but amortize quite nicely with the amount of rounds expended.
Plus, it is hobby that lets you tailor what you chamber to its
specific task. You will be able to create boutique loads not available
over the counter.

Here's some prices. Just remember that automation costs more money,
but takes a lot of the repetitive (boring) motion out of the task.
http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/ci...ding-Equipment

My daughters liked shooting the .45 more than they liked shooting the
9mm.

I always hear that but if this is not a short barrel tactical shotgun,
it is going to be pretty unwieldy in the average home.
Any idea that this will shoot a wide pattern in a home is simply
stupid. This is just a musket at close range.
You also have the problem of where you would store it safely and still
be able to get to it.

I think home defense starts with a big dog that is a light sleeper.

I'm really lucky then, got two of those buggers! Keeping a 12 gauge under your pillow couldn't be
that comfortable, but I suppose there are those that do it! I'll just leave mine in the case in the
closet.

When I was in Md I kept my 97 riot gun under the bed and a 1911 in the
night stand drawer but we didn't have kids and discouraged people from
bringing them around.
I have grand children now and I keep all of my guns locked up.
(Florida law) although getting to my Ruger and my Baretta is a 2
second thing.
I could tell you the trick but I would have to kill you ;-)
The shotgun and M1A are in another locked cabinet, hidden pretty well
but not really a 2 second thing, more like 10.

I like building hidden compartments in things I make.

"Bad neighborhoods" have a way of sneaking up on you in Maryland.
You think you are far enough out of DC to be safe, then DC comes out

Mt. Pleasant is a nice place, and there are lots more all over the state. The Lexington / Lake Murray area is one, and in the upstate the Greenville / Spartanburg area is nice. Almost no one from SC goes to Myrtle Beach, however. Tourist trap. Hilton Head is the upscale beach destination here. Edisto Island is a quieter, family kind of beach.

We'll be on the water in Charleston in about 24 hours. I'll wave in your son's general direction. Did he move down for Boeing?

My oldest son just moved his family from MA to Mount Pleasant, SC.

Beautiful place, within a few miles of the Isle of Palms Marina; one

of my stops when taking the Navigator south to Jupiter, FL.

He's been emailing pictures of several local marinas with slips for

sale. Seriously thinking of another boat down there in about a
year.

Just need to talk Mrs.E. out of her horses.

Mt. Pleasant is a nice place, and there are lots more all over the
state. The Lexington / Lake Murray area is one, and in the upstate
the Greenville / Spartanburg area is nice. Almost no one from SC goes
to Myrtle Beach, however. Tourist trap. Hilton Head is the upscale
beach destination here. Edisto Island is a quieter, family kind of
beach.

We'll be on the water in Charleston in about 24 hours. I'll wave in
your son's general direction. Did he move down for Boeing?

-------------------------------------------

Nope. He moved down because he got sick of Massachusetts. He and his
wife lived together for a year or so while he was
in the Navy, stationed down there. They loved it. Plus, he suffers
from severe asthma and there's something up here in
MA that constantly triggers it. He has far fewer and milder attacks
down there.

They have two girls aged 13 and 8. A year ago his wife had twins, one
girl, one boy. So, he has his hands full now at 39 years old.

I am looking forward to taking a trip down there this fall and scope
out the marinas and boats.
Mrs.E. is finally starting to agree that we don't need a place as
large as we have up here in MA.

Good luck with that. I had a sister who loved horses also. She was
afraid of heights so wouldn't crawl up on one but still ended up
owning a 'rescue horse' that she kept in a neighbours barn.

In downtown Charleston, Hank's and Coast are two good restaraunts. We have reservations at both this weekend. My wife loves the Seafood ala Wando at Hank's. But there are lots more places to try.

If the Wreck was open for lunch we'd go there too, but they're a dinner only place.

The most memorable restaurant I went to in Charleston was named SNOB. I

I think you mentioned "The Wreck" in an earlier post and I mentioned

it in

an e-mail to my son. He knows exactly where it is and is going to

try it

(may have already).

They just moved down there in early July. He's been scouting the area

out and so far they love it. A little hot, but they'll get used to

it.

liked the name and we had a very nice dinner there.

The Wreck is where the locals go for seafood if they don't cook there
own.

Mount Pleasant is a great place. If you son doesn't know about it,

tell

him to go to The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene, or as the locals

call it, The Wreck. There is no sign on the place, but once you find

it,

it's the best seafood in all of Charleston.

Wonder where that Larry guy from either Savanagh or Charlston is
these
days *He was an old navy type who had loads of info on the
Carolinas

Larry...forgot about him. I have an email addy for him somewhere,
but
I
don't know if it is still a good addy. He doesn't seem to post in
rec.boats.cruising anymore but, then, hardly anyone does. Larry live
along the river in Charleston.
-----------------------------------------------------

Is Larry the guy who rebuilt vintage Merc outboards or something?
I remember someone who seemed to have parts for almost anything
from the 40's or 50's. * This was back when rec.boats was a boating
newsgroup, of course.
-------------------------------------------------

Ah... the old rusty disk drive in my head slowly started spinning.
Larry wasn't the Merc guy. * *Larry repaired and serviced Hammond
organs.

It was another guy ... started with a "C" *that had the old Mercs.

You thinking of the guy they called Clams or something similar?
-------------------------------------

That's him.

Back to that 'Larry' guy. looks like a post of mine didn't make it
from yesterday.
My memories of Larry are..
he was very proud of his hometown (Charlston?) and only too happy to
offer advice to visitors.
he repaired church organs for a living
he drove an older Mercedes diesel sedan that he converted to burn used
frying oil that he collected from local restaurants
he worked his way onto a rich mans yacht with his electronics talents
and general handyman skills... probably learned in his navy days
he never forgave the Israelies for shooting up an American destroyer
during one of the wars over there.
