I imagine his mom was just done with him and sent him to live with dad for a while. That sounds like a thug to me. Once they tracked down the jewelry they found in his backpack he probably would have had a record. Dad didn't even miss him for 8 hours and I am not sure what they were doing that they didn't hear the gunshot, the cops and the EMTs right outside their door for an hour or more. It is probably the old adage, follow a druggie home and another druggie will open the door. Somebody sobered up around 3AM and noticed Trayvon wasn't home yet.
