Have they got the platinums in stainless steel now? I'm a little leary of a
plug I don't have to change for years but is not stainless.

I have never heard that one before. I personally would not use anything
but
them. If you install them, you will probably never have to change them
again. Probably why the mechanic does not like them because he never gets
to do the job again.
