The epicenter wasn't that far from the nuke plant on Lake Anna. Sure
hope there's no problem there...
Uh, it was a 5.9, there will be no problems at the nuke plant.
You have no credentials and your opinion on the matter is of no value.
News reports say the nukes were shut down and the diesel generators are
now pumping cooling water through the plant. Hopefully, there was no
damage, but it has been talked about as a possibility at Lake Anna for
years. I'm sure there will be a full inspection before the reactors are
restarted.
Yeah, ONE generator out of FOUR.... And by the way, I know quite a bit
about electrical generation. There is no damage.
There's no evidence you know anything other than how to shoot off your
mouth.
Well, Harry, would you like to have a conversation about different power
generating facilities? Care to discuss my training versus your training
in that are of expertise? I know, name calling and insulting, it's all
you know.

He will lie, of course.

Harry? Lie? Say it isn't so!! Did you notice how the coward and his side
kick backed down once again?- Hide quoted text -

Back down from you??
Kevin...you do have to ease up on that Georgia Special crop.... even
if you've had a bumper year.

Well, I'm not Kevin, but just to show you just HOW you backed down,
coward, let's try again. Do you want to bet $1000.00 US that I'm not
Kevin? Come on, coward, be a man for once.

I would not doubt the cracks were already there and the quake just shook
them loose.

But not sure I would want to be too close to it when she goes.

Some better picks and details.

Maybe if the right wing would be willing to maintain our
infrastructure, including funding national parks and monuments, this
wouldn't have happened.

There were actually a lot of buildings with damage in DC. The damn thing opened up a couple seams in
my sheet rock here and there, but I think I can get it back together. We've not blown sky high yet,
so I figure the gas lines are OK.

Good John- glad you and yours are safe!

Those are some pretty good shots , of course there has been cracks in
it for some time, but nothing of structure to cause panic, but I think
this will get someones attention. With some federal funding and a
bunch of corporate and private donations, I imagine it will be
repaired better than new. It worked for the Statue of Liberty.

The monument was restored in 1996 Clinton must have cut corners on the
restoration.

Infrastructure, LOL... The "shovel ready" projects were a joke, even
the few that did get done. We have three in particular here that are
just nuts. All three (three towns) were obviously projects that could
not get funded, but got funded so the money would not be lost. Anybody
who has worked for a town knows you have to spend every penny you get
each fiscal year so as not to lose it next time.
First in our town, there is a street that runs about 3/8 of a mile
between two main roads and runs near the High School. They put 4 brick
crosswalks there, They are all bumpy, and there is no reason for them.
Two of them go nowhere at all, lead to empty fields, another to a
house, and another to an apartment complex. They spend the whole
summer ripping up and doing this project, 30 some odd guys, huge
equipment, screwed up traffic near the high school all summer, oh, and
this tore up the brand new street they just redid last season...when
they could have painted crosswalks in a half day...

In the next town over they put an island down a main stretch of road
where interstate 84 drops off. Half the businesses on that side of the
road are hurting, one shut down within a month (gas station/conv
store). Again, this is a overdone system of islands and lights, u
turns, trees, and signs... It's not even really an intersection, the
whole area could have been brought more under control with an extra
stop light...

In the next town up, it's a way overdone traffic circle with cut
granite curbs, and all kinds of landscaping.. This is a 5 corners out
in the middle of tobacco country, a total waste.

None of these projects "saved or created any job", just the same old
town guys doing the same old shuffle... Next year they will be back to
the business of the town.. Collecting leaves, sucking out storm drains
etc. Only difference is they will ask for another (unfunded) full time
union guy or two because they "fell so far behind this year" snerk

Yup, 'shovel ready'.. Just about a nonsensical as every dollar
"creating" a dollar forty for the economy... LOL!

Yep, we sure got screwed on that one. Tell me, are you better off now
than you were when the Democrats took over congress or the Whitehouse?
I don't know anybody that is...

Looks like the quake was just to much for it looking at the places
where it cracked (pics we have available). I am not sure if any
different maintenance would change that. I would guess most of the
restoration was cosmetic, probably not really structural. The original
engineering just seems to have failed..

I have to wonder if some honest engineer is gonna' look at the cracks in
those big blocks and say, "it can't be made safe"... I am not saying it
can't, but with such big cracks, in such significant structural
components, I have to wonder.

The Washington Monument is, for all intents and purposes, an
unreinforced masonry structure and has little ability to resist the
seismic forces of a strong earthquake. I supposed a first-class
engineering firm could seismic retrofit it, but the expense would be
enormous and there would be visible differences in the monument's
appearance. There are some cast iron supports inside the monument, but
they are not sufficient to hold the structure up in case of a big quake.

In California, which has a lot of unreinforced masonry buildings,
significant retrofitting has been mandated, but the purpose of the
retrofitting has not been to protect the buildings but, instead, their
occupants. This involves installation of a new steel skeleton inside the
buildings so that when a large quake hits, the outside of the building
may fall into the street, but the inside of the building will not
collapse. That's the theory.

I'd bet that an earthquake in the "7" range would have flattened the
monument.
