remove, and how well the computer will run without them?

You don't need or want Vista, install Win7 instead. If the computer
is current, there's no way it'd be delivered with Vista.

I've been using Win7 Pro for quite a while now, and I really like it.
Very stable like XP Pro, and it's easier. It does take some getting
used to but not like Vista.

I've been using Win7 Pro for quite a while now, and I really like it.
Very stable like XP Pro, and it's easier. It does take some getting
used to but not like Vista.

Vista was a resource hog, having to support the technical bridge from
XP forward. Win7 has lost all the extraneous, unneccesary crud. It's
much lighter and faster than Vista and closer in stability to XP.

I've been running 7 pro ultimate for about a year and find it very
stable.

My wife's new home desktop computer came with some flavor of Win 7, but
other than installing some software on it for her, I've managed to avoid
using it. She's also got an ancient HP laptop running XP, but only uses
that to pull in email when she travels. It's a clunker and I think I'm
going to get her to donate it to some organization and get her an iPad
III when it comes out, or maybe a netbook. Her laptop weighs about 8
pounds with the powerpack. The iPads weigh next to nothing.

Are they talking about Microsoft's infamous "upgrade to a more
familiar version" (AKA removing Vista and installing XP).
My wife had her vendor do that with all the new machines in her office
that came with Vista.

BTW Microsoft may not be enforcing that "you can't swap machines
without calling us" thing on XP pro anymore.

another one and expected I would have to call the 800 number, for the
3d degree before they would authenticate it (like the olden days) but
it sailed right through the online okey dokey, passed the microsoft
"legal OS" test and let me download the new media player.

without incident. There are a handful of varieties of Win 7, and you can
upgrade from one to another by paying a fee, but I didn't see anything
that let you downgrade from Win 7 to XP.

The two I'm looking at now both have Windows 7.

They're both the same price, but the Lenovo has a few more features, like Blu-Ray DVD, bigger hard
drive, more RAM, one more USB port and a 5-in-1 card reader, and what appears to be a nicer keypad.

A friend has a Lenovo he bought in 2007. Uses it in his garage. Loves it.

I'm leaning that way.

I think MS came to their senses and is only screening for blatant
abuses such as many different machines on the same license key. The
vast majority of people calling the 800 number had legitimate issues.
