If anyone has any ideas for interesting stretches of river to paddle or local outfitters to use in connection with the trip outlined below, I would be most grateful. Our local scout troop, which camps all over the midwest, is looking for suggestions for outfitters and paddling spots somewhere in south/central or eastern Wisconsin, e.g., on the Wisconsin river, for an overnight trip in September. (Start in the morning, camp on a sandbar or river bank, and finish up the next day, either one way or a circuit.) We will probably end up using canoes, although I would like to offer any boys who are interested the chance to try river kayaking if that worked out. Thanks. TFJ Well of course the most obvious spot would be the stretch downstream from either Sauk City or Spring Green. Not exciting fast water perhaps but still a nice float with plenty of sandbars. There are also canoe liveries in both towns. You should be aware that there is (was?) a nude beach at Mazomanie so plan your outing accordingly. There are some fairly nice day trips in south-eastern Wisconsin, Turtle Creek comes to mind, but not much in the way of multi-day trips. North-eastern Wisconsin may have some longer trips that would be more interesting fast water wise. The lower Peshtigo and Oconto may be worth exploring although you'd probably have to camp in a campground. g.c. |
