When we finally leave it is going to still be a **** hole ... dominated by a stronger Taliban than there is now. Every innocent person we kill results in dozens of new Taliban members. Everyone in their extended family. We have become the Soviets to them. Two years of no progress because Bush left such a mess. We haven't become the soviets... we might become them, but not so far. I don't see any different policies or timetables coming out of this administration. It is fun to blame Bush for everything but some ideas are just fundamentally wrong, no matter who is doing it. Our man in Kabul is negotiating with the Taliban as we speak so I think the whole mission was a waste of time. We keep fighting terrorism like it was a central government endeavor. There is no central character or even a central organization. We are fighting an idea and the next attack is as likely to come from Indonesia or Africa as Afghanistan/Pakistan. Then you aren't really looking. They are saying 2014 today but I bet that slips, unless we simply declare victory and let the big dog eat. Anyone who really thinks Afghanistan will end up being anything remotely like a western democracy or even have what we consider a functioning government is foolish. We can leave now and have it descend into civil war or we can stay there 10 more years and thousands more dead Americans, then have it descend into civil war. I don't know why you keep talking about "the big dog." It's really a meaningless phrase. I don't think there's anyone in the gov't who actually believes that we'll have a western-style democracy there. They can certainly have a functioning gov't. But of course this is all Obama's fault, right? Obama has nothing to do with it nor did Bush. Even Bob admits these are tribal societies who are incapable of having anything but continual civil war. There was a guy on Charley Rose the other night quoting McCrystal. Basically he said we can't catch and kill our way out of this problem. The Taliban quickly replaces their fallen leaders and we are really at war with their birth rate. These people are not advancing any real complex agenda. A leader is anyone who will stand up and say "follow me". You claimed that Obama isn't doing anything differently than Bush. That's untrue. So either he does or doesn't have something to "do with it." Pick one. Also, I think you're giving much less credit to the Afg'y people than they deserve. Most people in Afg. are not Taliban, so there's no "birth rate" problem. |
