I know the season is ending.

What do you do with your boat(s) over the winter if you are not in the
southern climes?

I store my old classic in a shed. My newer boat spends the winter on the
hard in a nearby boatyard, in a cradle the previous owner had built for
her. The cradle has an A-frame that can be erected to support a couple
of tarps.

The old boat has a simple inboard marine engine that's easy enough to
service. The newer boat has a pair of diesels that i have an outside
contractor service. I take the batteries home.

I've arranged for a diesel service company to send a tech to my boat
when she is hauled next month. He'll take care of the engines,
generator, cooling, et cetera, and I'll drain the fresh water tanks and
get some help to pull the batteries and take them to my basement,
along with removable upholstery. i'm reading up on what else needs to be
done. I had a boat almost this size a couple years ago, but it wasn't a
plush boat, so there is more to do now.

Once we're done with whatever needs doing, the yard's "shrinkwrapper
guys" will seal the boat up for the winter.

One thing that's easy to forget is the hot water heater. Of course
if you have water cooled air conditioning or refigeration, that
requires winterization also.

Regarding batteries, there is really no reason to bring them home as
long as you leave them fully charged and disconnected.

I have an 18 ft, and a 23 ft. They are in my warehouse and are tucked
away. The 30' Pontoon (barge) has had the furniture pulled and will
have to fend for itself out in the relentless cold cruel world!

I clean the batteries when I get them home, put a bit of grease on the
lugs, charge them up slowly, and then charge them up once a month to
keep them fully charged.

A lot of diesel starting batteries weigh over 100 lbs, much too heavy
to cart them around unnecessarily. Our trawler has a pair of 8Ds
which are not uncommon, about 140 lbs each. I have to rig a block
and tackle from the engine room overhead just to lift them into place.

Let us know how you make out.

Yeah, I've been wondering whether I really want to do that. The
shrinkwrap guy says he can rig a "door" out of plastic so I can get into
the boat during the winter if needed. But I doubt the boat will be close
enough on the hard to run an extension cord to the charger to the
batteries. I might be able to run the charger off my little honda gas
generator and run a cord up from the ground to the charger.

That's what I'd do, and the zipper door is a good idea in any case.
We used to do that with our old Bertram up north. The shrinkwrap
provided a lot of solar heating so it was fairly comfortable on the
boat even in cold weather - good for getting winter projects done.

You'll find that the batteries won't need much charging as long as
they are completely switched off or disconnected.

Well, it certainly seems that I haven't missed a lot in the last 11
months..... though it *is* a little better than it was the last time I
checked in.... July 4th weekend.

I still hate the web groups, but they *are* moderated.... and I do
get useful information and advice...

How've you been? What's this I read about a new boat? You didn't keep
Yo-Ho long!

I think I was permanently spoiled by the much, much, much better salt
water fishing along the Atlantic Coast and in the ICW of Florida and
Georgia. On its best days, compared to Florida, Chesapeake Bay
fishing...sucks. To do the sort of fishing I wanted to do, you'd have to
be living around Virginia Beach.

We were doing a lot of other things on the boats we've had up here and
not doing a lot of fishing. Took me less than a week to sell my 21'
Parker as the arrival of the new boat got closer. The buyer found me
through, believe it or not, Craig's List.

I've booked three days of ocean fishing next month in Florida...that
should get me through the winter.

The batteries and concrete thing is an urban legend.

Actually, it isn't... It is, however, obsolete information. Decades
ago, when battery cases were made of asphaltic substances, you could
drain a battery by leaving it on a wet surface, concrete or otherwise.

Today, with plastic cases, it is not an issue....

I like to take 'em home to clean 'em up, slow charge them and keep them
reasonably warm over the winter. I put a slow trickle charge on once a

I have a permanent mount multi bank charger in the boat and keep it
plugged in at the yard, so I don't remove the boat batteries. However
I've had good luck with these little guys on other things like the
motorcycle.....

I think they really will desulfate a sick battery....

Speaking about tools...................
Gene, do you have any opinion on the Fein Multi Master oscillating

This week Sears had their Craftsman model at 20% off.
I have a few 12" ceramic floor tiles to replace and wonder if this tool

My tool boxes are full of Craftsman hand tools and I own a few of the

For the home user, the Craftsman, Harbor Freight multitools will be fine.
The patent expired on the multitool is why everyone is copying Fein. Lots
of the cheaper tools will be good for an occasional user. Will fail with
the commercial high use stuff. Home Depot has a Ryobi multitool for less
than $99 here.

Danaher makes Craftsman.... and Armstrong, Allen, K-D, Matco, Sata and
others.... *same warranty as Snap-On......

Snap-on ratchets are substandard IMO. Well the gears are too fine and
easily stripped, especially when you take their typical 3/8's drive
ratchet and put a 2' cheater pipe on it's handle while trying to break
loose a left-hand threaded bolt while thinking it is a right-hand.

Well, at least it should have been!

Harbor Freight has one for $35. It's probably good enough for light
duty grout cutting.

Looks like the spoofer is going to win if you are going to start lashing

How would you know the political leanings of the active ID spoofer(s)?

Virtually all of the ID spoofers who have been active here recently have
been on your side of the political spectrum. The exception was the one

I don't see a problem discussing a current problem here. There's no way

Virtually all of the ID spoofers who have been active here recently have
been on your side of the political spectrum. The exception was the one
many thought was Loogy.

I don't see a problem discussing a current problem here. There's no way
to resolve it, of course.- Hide quoted text -

Besides, you are wrong.. Of the posters here who are still calling
names, JPS, Don, Plume, and Slammer all lean in your direction
politically... None of them are "righties".. so your obversations are
skewed.. BTW, I haven't seen you oppose any of them for continuing to
play the troll game, at the same time you are calling me out for not
attacking a spoofer???

It's easy to block posts from JPS, Don, Plume and Slammer, if that is
what you want to do, because they are not posting with the IDs of other
posters, as far as I know.

I know the season is ending.

What do you do with your boat(s) over the winter if you are

I store my old classic in a shed. My newer boat spends the
winter on the
hard in a nearby boatyard, in a cradle the previous owner had
built for
her. The cradle has an A-frame that can be erected to support
a couple
of tarps.

The old boat has a simple inboard marine engine that's easy
enough to
service. The newer boat has a pair of diesels that i have an
outside
contractor service. I take the batteries home.

Looks like it is a little better than it was at the end of the
year.... what I find striking is how few posts and posters....
and
the absence of most of those that were here a few years ago.

We have a goodly number of posters here who either have no
interest in
boating or very little interest in boating, and are here *only*
to stir
up crap against posters they don't like. Whatever excuses they
offer up
for their behavior, the fact remains that they and they alone are
responsible for how they behave.

That's the reality of rec.boats, Gene.

Well, it certainly seems that I haven't missed a lot in the last 11
months..... though it *is* a little better than it was the last
time I
checked in.... July 4th weekend.

I still hate the web groups, but they *are* moderated.... and I do
get useful information and advice...

How've you been? What's this I read about a new boat? You didn't
keep
Yo-Ho long!

It started about a week ago... me and Harry got on board, that
made it a
lot easier. The spoofers have outlived their usefulness and when
we had
the opportunity we all remembered why we came here in the first
place,
adn here we are about a week later with a fairly stable base to
work our
way back from... Glad to have you back.. Big hugs from Scottysnerk

Looks like I checked in at the right time. It still was crap here in
July.

Hope things stay on track....

"me and Harry got on board, that made it a lot eaisier."

yikes.

The ID spoofers are active again...this newsgroup is not on track and
will never be.

It's just the one... Just hold fire, and use your kill file.

That's what the ID spoofer wants...to "killfile" HarryK or any other
ID I use. Surely you understand that, right?

The game seems to be to try and marginalize you. If everyone filters the
spoofers each time they act up, your voice is effectively silenced in
this newsgroup.
Quite the little conspiracy!

That is their game.

I don't see why Don cares, he is still stirring up the pot and name
calling... Either way, since you guys keep harping on it, I have an
opinion on the spoofers too. They indeed were here to marginalize one
poster, that is a fact, I do know the original spoofer quite well but he
only spoofed for a day or two and was replaced by a much more prolific
poster. I get the impression he was happy to step aside and watch...
Quite frankly, maybe with the delicate touch of an Atomic Bomb, after
all was said and done, it worked. Yes there was some collateral damage,
and like any battle the "battle plan" went out the window on day one,
but in the end, it worked. I have serious doubts that the target would
be on board with the new policies of the oh so wise Great Sage of Zoar
if he and/or his audience wasn't getting smashed into nonexistence by
the spoofers... Just my opinion, since you all are posting yours, over
and over again.

Me? I'm just happy we got the group back with the exception of a couple
who just can't help but troll.. It's the best it's been in nearly a
decade. Buck up kids, talk about something fun before I have to post
more motorcycle stuff....

One of my nephews started a mid-level job with a federal agency a few
months ago in the area of computer security, specifically cryptology. I
have no idea what he does for a living now, even if he explained it to
me. What we both know, though, is that I paid for about half his college
expenses through the master's degree he got last May. I do believe,
though, that "resolving" usenet IDs and finding out the actual names of
spoofers would be something he could do while comatose.

I've been toying with the idea of asking him to do so with a couple of
the spoofers here, just for grins, of course. I wouldn't do anything
with the information.

Oh...the "original spoofer" was Tom. The more prolific poster is flajim.

no... I was the original spoofer.. About ten posts over three days then
I was pushed out of the way so I sat back and watched from that point
on.

So, *you* started the mess, eh? Cute.
