The real vote on this will be at the enlistment office.
If the southern rednecks who make up the core of the infantry do not
show up and the current ones fail to reenlist expect a draft or a
sharp decrease in our ability to wage these crusades.

recruitin levels are at an all time high. in fact the USCG is cutting
1000 enlisted because reenlistment is so high

You can't run a war with interpreters and language specialists.

and you cant run one without them either

A quote:
"But it turns out that while Mr. Dow Jones believes that our Great
Recession is over (that’s a joke), one invisible hand in our market
doesn’t know what the other is doing. Americans are going so broke in
this jobless recovery that instead of finding work in our not-so-happy-
fun-time economy, they’d rather get shot up and shoot at other people
in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other places.

That’s right, the Pentagon reported on this day of Dow 10,000 that our
strained Armed Forces have beat their recruiting goals for the fiscal
year, driven by economic unease."

You see, the uptick in recruiting levels has nothing to do with asking
or telling, but instead it has everything to do with BO's jobless
"recovery". The emporer is spending us into the ground, and even the
teenagers now understand.

We won't know what effect ask/tell has until things change. Until
then, you're blowing smoke. As usual?

It'll be an issue when the openly gay fags start getting fantail

Since most of the public supports its repeal, I doubt that's going to
stop
recruitment. People act as though there are no gays in the military.
The
point of repealing this is so that those who are there don't have to
lie
about it.

Again, the real vote is not going to be a poll of the general public,
it will be among those who are likely to join the military or those
who might reenlist. That is why Gates sent out those questionnaires he
is in so much trouble over.

Cut the $500 billion we spend on the military in half. Get rid of half
the personnel, keeping only a portion of those who can deal with 21st
Century realities.

It is really more like $696 billion but I do agree with the "half"
part. The problem is, if we are still going to wage war with 14th
century opponents we need some people who are not hindered by reality.
Nobody in their right mind would go up into the mountains of
Afghanistan ... for anything.
Maybe they could exempt certain units from don't ask. That might be a
compromise everyone could live with.

And, God forbid that someone who's gay should serve in the military..

Where are they going to get the homophobes to do the fragging? Who
says that the troops will go outside the law on what is to most a
trivial issue. I think most in the military, like most outside of it,
will mind their own business.I think it would be like race. When I was
in, 40+ years ago, it was your ass if you did anything racist. Nobody
did.

it's funny watching the right spin this. their policies would have
produced 25% unemployment, like 1929. but because obama's black, they
simply think he's wrong.

Blanket party time?

I can't imagine what would happen if an openly gay guy walked into the barracks,
dropped his bag on the floor, and said, "Here I am, boys."

And once again, the military becomes the employer of last resort, which
explains how in their time, losers like herring, bert robbins, and
flajim got in.
