Why would anyone in his right mind be thinking of vacationing in Mexico?

I was speaking of places other than border towns. I know this would your
idea of a vacation, but most people go to places like Cancun and Mazatlan.

Cancun reminds me of Ft Myers beach but you will see more Mexicans in
Ft Myers Beach. Cozomel is even more so.
All of the bars and hotels out on the Cancun beach are staffed by
American kids it seems.
If you go down into El Centro it is more of a Mexican town but it
really has a border feel to it.
You can get the Mexican experience once you get out of town but you
better have a native guide or be pretty good with your espanol. We
hooked up with a girl from Nevada who lives there now and had a pretty
good time.
All things considered I would rather spend my money here in the good
old USA.

Cancan is overbuilt and overpopulated with tourists. The airport isn't
much, either, but landing there is tolerable. Once you do, if you are
seeking beaches, head due south along Federal Highway 307. Tulum is
nice, as are the big bays south of there.

Chichen Itza inland from Cancun is a must see, especially since the
Mexican government isn't doing much to preserve it or keeping the
tourists from running all over the remains. It'll be crumpled into dust
one of these days.

The view from Tulum ruins is nice but the place outside the ruins looks like
Mississippi roadside shacks. I'm glad we brought our refreshments with us.
We stayed near Playa del Carmen. That is another ********.
