More boating!

Alright, you slackers...

Today is sunny and 74, tomorrow is sunny and 77 degrees. Spring has
nearly sprung here in SC. I've got a couple of new items for the
boat, and will be out on the lake tomorrow for a few hours.

Who else will be boating this weekend?

I wish I was there. Here in IL. it's suppose to rain and possibly snow
Sunday. But unil then, I've got my small boat ready to hit the lake
when it warms up to a consistant basis, and will be prepping the big
boat to do at least a three-day river cruise later on in the summer.

It's nice to see an attempt for a boating thread. . It beats watching
people insult each other, especially over nothing.

BTW, we've had three days of excellent weather here so far. In the mid
60's with bright sunny days. and I love it now that we've had a time
change and the days are starting to get longer.

I visited my local marina. The owner and his contractors are rebuilding
the docks alongside the ramps, doing a bit of dredging at the far end,
moving gravel, replacing electricals at some of the slips, et cetera.
The ramps are usable. Saw at least a couple dozen guys scraping the
bottoms of their boats, painting, et cetera.

*Sure* signs of spring, finally.

Good to hear it, Harry. Yeah, the people over at the main marina at
Carlyle Lake are making a lot of overdue improvements, and really
cleaning the place up. It was nice to begin with, but they're putting
concrete in the yard and getting rid of the dusty gravel and pot holes
they've had for years. There is jsut sort of a sinking feeling to get
your sial boat all gussied up, only to come back a couple weeks later
to launch it from the hard, only to find that it's covered with lime
rock dust. Not to mention that if it rains you have dust streaks
runnign down the sides.

They have some members who have some pretty nice craft there, and I
think they were complaining. Or at least that's what I understand.

Breezy Point Marina, the one I use, has very low bulkheads and parts of
it often are "overflowed" at especially high tides. The property is in a
marshland, and while it is grandfathered out of being zoned out of
business, the county and state won't allow the owner to make really
substantial improvements, so the access roads and parking areas are
gravel. It's a never-ending battle for the owner, and there's always
dusty gravel and potholes. You just get used to them. But, as I have
stated many times, the ramps are great and deep and well-maintained, the
marina store is nice, it sells all sorts of stuff, including bait and
brewskis (for those who drink) and gas and diesel at reasonable prices.

My marina needs for Yo-Ho aren't complicated, so the place suits us
fine. Plus, it's only a couple of minutes from where we live.

Also have a boat at another marina...it's a bit fancier.

That seems odd. I wonder why the 'powers that be' are against it? I'd
thik they'd be all for allowing the improvements as it would boost the
economy and increase value to the property. Not counting better

Well, Vic ought to love that. At least he's used to it. I've also
heared that Western Missouri could get anywhere from 6-8 inches of
snow.

I hope it doesn't happen here. But I've heard mainly rain and a
possibility of snow and some ice. and if it does snow, it won't last
long.

But I've been surprised before.

I dunno, I'll ask him for details when he's not as busy. There's a small
county waterfront park next to the marina. It's a favorite gathering
place on nice weekends for large family barbecues. Judging by the aromas
I've enjoyed on my way into and out of the marina as I pass the park,
some of those families are blessed with first-rate cooks.

Well John, we both actually knocked off early today, and went out for
a couple of hours. Just got back in, and left the boat uncovered for
the night (rare!). It'll be ready for us tomorrow about 1pm, and my
son is coming out with us for the day. Back to the house in the
evening for steaks on the grill.

I made an appointment at the dealer for a pontoon cleaning and oil
change next week. It's got quite a bit of growth on it from sitting
in the water over the winter, and we always have it cleaned every year
anyway. They have a LARGE forklift that they lift the boat up with,
then pressure-wash and acid clean the 'toons. It'll look like new
when we get it back, and with a couple of touchups by me with a scrub
brush in the water over the summer, it'll last until next year.

The big Yammie started and ran flawlessly. Looking forward to running
the tank of gas out and re-filling, even though it was treated with
the Marine Sta-Bil last year. The gas has been sitting lomger than it
ever has in the past, as this weather prevented us from getting out
much this winter. Too freakin' cold. This global warming is killing
me!

Good to hear you got out. Sounds like you had a great day.

We have friends from Holland coming next week. I won't be ready to try to launch
the boat myself, but with Adri's (my friend) help, I'm sure planning to do a
little boating. He and his wife are shipping their VW camper van from Rotterdam
to Baltimore. We'll pick it up a few days after they arrive. They'll stay here a
couple weeks and then spend the next three months travelling.

I'd like to get into the Ches Bay and do a little fishing. Even some bottom
fishing for spot, perch, or croaker would be fun. I went down to the marina a
couple weeks ago, and the boat looks fine. The cover took a beating, but the new
one is here. Next year I'll give serious though to shrinkwrapping, especially if
I get the phone number of the real cheap guy in MD that one of the poster here
is always talking about.

I'm also interested in seeing how this new dog of mine does on a boat.

Lots and lots of bad water. Here is a report done by the Chesapeake Bay
Foundation, probably the major group fighting to save the bay.

http://www.cbf.org/Document.Doc?id=170

It's not necessary to read the whole report, just skimming it will give a feel
for the problems the bay is having.

Here is a good article on some of the problems also.

http://tinyurl.com/yhmqtue

Obviously, pollution is the big problem, but overfishing of menhaden is also on
the list. Menhaden are the basic feed fish in the bay, and they do a lot of
filtering of water. But, they also make great fish oil and fertilizer. Maybe the
asian carp could be a more productive source for both.

IIrc these are the same striped bass that show up around here later in
the season. If they are, they are known for going some 40+ miles up the
Connecticut River, way beyond the salt or brakish water areas. Brown
trout can live way down by the shoreline too, not sure how far they
actually swim out into the Sound, but I have caught them a few hundred
yards up river from the Sound.

little boating.

Sounds like a great time! What else can you catch there?

Striped bass are the big draw, along with trout and flounder. But fishing for
all three has gotten much worse over the past few years, especially the trout
and flounder.

Is the entire bay salt water?

IIrc these are the same striped bass that show up around here later in
the season. If they are, they are known for going some 40+ miles up the
Connecticut River, way beyond the salt or brakish water areas. Brown
trout can live way down by the shoreline too, not sure how far they
actually swim out into the Sound, but I have caught them a few hundred
yards up river from the Sound.

I'm not familiar with your area. The bad is an estuary so it should be
mostly freshwater. It's a huge body of water so the tides can only
affect a small portion of the bay, right?
