The left hand's finger should be curled and the thumb should be along
the seam in (i.e. parallel to) the trousers. It is natural to tense up
when you come to a rigid position of attention when saluting.

Well, I guess that depends who you're saluting and just how tense the
guy makes you. It almost looks like Obama is going to rub noses with
the guy. That'd make me pretty tense also.

I think in many of these shots many are assuming the guys and gals
pictured are stationary and not in the process of coming to a stop or
snapping to attention, or both... ??
