Default Not this time of year

We hit the ramp at 0600 this morning to see what we could catch. 50º in
the air and 68º in the water. Dressed in shorts and long-sleeved
shirts, an older guy asked us where we were from. The numbers on the
boat should have been his first clue that we were locals, but I guess
his blood was a bit thinner than ours. He asked what we were going
after and we both said "peacocks". "Not this time of year" he told us,
it's too cold for peacocks. Who knew fish stopped eating for months at
a time?

Within 15 minutes we had hit the first spot and caught the first fish of
the day - a 2# peacock bass. We stayed on that spot and caught eight
more - the largest 3-1/2 pounds. We don't eat peacocks but my buddy
wanted to take some to his home pond/lake. The live well was full but
neither of us knew the bag limit for peacock bass. I called home and my
resident Googler found out that the limit was two with one over 17" per
day. We did a quick release and we were legal.

We made it back to the ramp at 1400 with four peacocks, two large mouth,
and four oscars. They were all transported in my friend's 40 gallon
aerated tub for a short trip to his local pond.
