We're having 60 mph winds today and tonight forecast. Fortunately, the house is protected with UPS, so I can still work, but I was supposed to go out with friends. My neighbor said he's come by and chainsaw them so I can get out, but that'll be tomorrow. It's too dangerous to be out right now. I'm amazed nothing has hit the house that's bigger around than a baseball bat (10 or so hits so far). The little lake is all stirred up, and it looks like someone's dinghy is sunk next to the dock. -- Nom=de=Plume How big are your UPS batteries? They're generally big enough to get everything shut down properly. We're gettin' some wx here as well. --Mike I don't know the wattage? if that's what it is. I have a big battery bank (8D-size? - they weigh a ton each - I can't even move one) that can run the whole house from solar panel charging for quite a while, plus I have a 3000 Honda generator that can run things for about 12 hours if necessary. The solar panel is an 8kw system, which was expensive, but I got a state rebate. Everything switches automatically (not the generator), but there's still a pause, so I also have my main computer with its own UPS. That one is an APC 1500. -- Nom=de=Plume Ok, that's different than your run of the mill UPS. You have a solar system charging batteries, that run thru an inverter for AC power in the house. I just installed a similar system for a customer... 30Kw. His whole roof is solar collectors. Big house. --Mike Wow.. 30kw, that's pretty big. I was thinking about getting a few more panels, but got talked out of it. I don't really need it, as the longest outage that I've been here has been 3 days. Mine isn't on the roof though... it's in a field. I also had to let the local utility know about it, since they don't want to potentially get electrocuted. I feed the grid when it's not charging... I think that's how it works. -- Nom=de=Plume |

diainc... Look at the bright side. FREE FIREWOOD. You DO have a fireplace, don't you? JR who has kept his fireplace stocked for years with blown down trees. nom=de=plume wrote: Looks like I'm stuck here for now... two huge trees got blown over the access road. I have two actually. One (in bedroom area) has an insert for real heat. The big one burns logs, which I mostly use for guests and family when they show up in the winter. I'm splitting the wood with the guy who chainsawed it... least I could do.. but it'll be a couple of seasons before it can be used. I have plenty of wood... higher than I stand, besides there's always something fallen in the area I could scavenge if nec. The only problem is me using the chainsaw. It's too cumbersome and I'm afraid I'll chop off a leg or get it stuck, so I "hire out" (read bribe) for the actual cutting. -- Nom=de=Plume |

My wife loves hers and I admit if I am just cutting up firewood I like it too. I still want a gas saw if I am doing any heavy duty tree cutting. I don't need it that much, but I already have a Stilh 310. It's about 15 lbs., which didn't seem like much at the time of purchase, but.... A good reason to keep my ex close, but not too close. heh... -- Nom=de=Plume |
