Default Stupid GPS? or Stupid driver?

Now can you really trust GPS to help navigate channels etc?

Heh - oh yeah. Garmin does not have a system for updating the orbit
data on a weekly basis - like every other GPS system does.

It's one reason why I won't buy Garmin anything.

My TomTom is great this way. You update the orbit data every couple
of weeks and it's like an instant on - you aquire the sats and you
have your position within a couple of seconds.

Great way to update.

Yeah, here's another nut-case that got some publicity for about the
same thing....http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/classifie...er-follows-gps...

FWIW.... *I have a Garmin 265WT. I started having issues with it not
acquiring satellites as quickly as it did when new and then, finally,
both losing acquisition and showing me driving 100 feet off of the
road. This was in strong contrast to how it originally worked, when
new, as it was incredibly accurate.

To make a long story short, a call to Garmin led to the information
that one needs to save ones user waypoints and other valuable
information and do a complete reset of the GPS, including reloading
the OS. After accomplishing this task the GPS again acted as it did
just out of the box....

Why? Dunno exactly, but it has something to do with the saving of
inaccurate satellite information, eventually resulting in corruption.

Seems like a bad design/idea....

I suppose that can happen when you put too much faith in machine and
toss common sense.

I plead guilty. Used a Garmin Nuvi 200 on my recent Florida vacation.
It had me on a course that made perfect sense.
Continue on LeCanto road until Truman, then turn right.
Had come in from the opposite direction before, and knew my dad's
place was right off Truman, a couple blocks from LeCanto.
About 3 miles from my dad's, the right lane became right turn only at
an stoplight.
Guy let me into the middle lane, but it was a pretty sharp turn-in.
Apparently that confused Nuvi's center of balance.
She said turn left.
So I went all the way to the left turn lane and turned left.
Knew it didn't make sense. But I did it.
Sonofabitch - what a fool I am.
Won't happen again.
I'm sorry.
Think I was fooled because I ignored her earlier when she was right.
Trying to make amends I guess.
But it's best not to personify a damn machine.
Anyway, we had some fun getting back on course, gravel roads and all.
Never would have seen that 15 mph dusty road otherwise.
Reminded me of Ozarks farm roads. In Florida.

There is something about taking orders from a talking machine ... I
think I'll remain a Luddite. ;-)

That's what I said when I got the thing as a gift.
Tried to give it away.
Now I wouldn't travel far from home without it.
It's really handy on the road away from home territory.
But locals best know how to get where you're going.

Don't get me wrong, I think GPS is a great invention, but I use it more
as a road map. It's not the using of GPS that bothers me, it's the
taking orders from the damn machine.

Luddite for me. But I go beyond satalite guidance. I'm too old school
for baout anybody.

But it seems to me that in many cases the GPS is worth about as much
as MapQuest.
