To make a long story short, a call to Garmin led to the information that one needs to save ones user waypoints and other valuable information and do a complete reset of the GPS, including reloading the OS. After accomplishing this task the GPS again acted as it did just out of the box.... Why? Dunno exactly, but it has something to do with the saving of inaccurate satellite information, eventually resulting in corruption.
