Default first night on the boat

ah, it's GREAT to have a boat again. nice old sedan cruiser...spent
saturday cleaning her up; wiped the cabin, cleaned the vinyl seats at
the helm station, etc.

weather man screwed up. he was calling for 6' seas and 2" of rain on
saturday...the bay was actually a sheet of glass and no rain until
after midnight...a gentle shower.

sat on the flybridge and watched the sun go down...felt the soft
breezes from the sea....retired to the cabin and listened to the gulls
getting ready for the night. turned in and slept a very, very sound
sleep until the sun rose and filled the cabin with light (having a
sedan cruiser is nice).

didn't get a chance to take her out since i haven't registered it yet
but that's next....

boy is it GREAT having a boat!

We went out yesterday for about six hours. Our part of the bay was
pretty calm, but it was pretty hot and the humidity had to be just this
side of a downpour. We poked around Solomons Island, at the mouth of the
Patuxent River, went swimming in the river, ate lunch at a waterside
restaurant, then headed home. Temps a bit lower today, but humidity just
as high...stayed away from the water.

Congratulations on the boat.

It is nice. My second Contender, a 32 Fisharound, I used to love to
go to the marina when storms came up - I'd just sit in the Captain's
chair and watch the wind, listen to the sail boat rigging chime and
watch the rain and waves. I could do that for hours - wonderful. Turn
in for the night in the cuddy and get the rest you can only get on a
boat.

I'm sure you will have some good times on that boat.

By the way, I know you got a Tollycraft - how about some details?

nice old '77, 26' sedan cruiser. new engine, fresh water cooled. i
had an express cruiser several years ago and really like the open air
feel of the sedan cruiser. single screw inboard which, the guy i
bought it from, says it's a real bear to back down....trying to
prepare the wife to grab the lines when i back it up against the
pilings at the dock....so we'll see how it goes next weekend....

Ah yes - the old back and fill. I've never had to screw around with
that being an outboard type - vectored thrust is my friend. :)

That's a classic boat. I like the open sedan type small pocket
cruisers like that - personally, I think you get a little more room
that way. Pheonix made a similar boat for a few years modeled after
the Tollycraft.

Solid boats.

Now that I'm temporarily boatless (at least here in CT), I've been
looking around for something to either restore or work on this Winter.
I found a Uniflite Salty Dog in Stonington - siezed engine, but the
interior is in good shape - couple of blisters on the hull that need
attention, needs new canvass and eisenglass enclosure and the
electronics updated.

I don't know - we'll see. Gotta figure out what I'd do with it after
I finished it. Just what I need - another boat.

i didn't realize how much i'd missed having a boat until i got another
one. even with all the work, the expense, the travel time and traffic
to the shore, it's worth it!

The odd thing about it is that it really is worth it. Seriously - when
you stop to consider exactly what goes into a boat purchase and what
you do to maintain it in order keep it in good shape over the years,
it seems expensive, but the sheer enjoyment you get out of it -
everything from fixing this and that, to decommissioning for the
winter to re commissioning - something to do.

I was thinking about that the other day - just take my Ranger bay boat
for example. I bought it originally for just under $38K, boat, engine,
trailer. Another $1K for a 24 volt trolling motor, another $1K for
this and that (safety gear and the like) - call it $40K brand new ten
years ago.

Since then, figuring roughly now, $3K to have the bottom redone, $5K
for the custom T-top, $500 for the jack plate, $20K for the repower to
ETEC, $4K for regel coating after the accident I had a couple of years
ago when that clown pulled out in front of me on the highway, $2K for
electronics, $1K for new T-top skin, another $2K or so for new gauges
and this and that. Scott can tell you - that Ranger is in mint
condition - it doesn't look ten years old - it looks like it's a year
old at most.

~~ mumble - mumble ~~

$37K on top of the $40K I when I purchased it - I've got almost
$80,000 in that boat. :)

The thing of it is - I really like this boat. It's the only boat, and
I've owned about 20 something boats in the 50 some odd years I've been
boating, that I've kept this long and I honestly don't see me selling
it. It really suits me for some for some reason. I've made a couple
of runs at selling it, but to be honest, every time it comes down to
actually committing to sell it, I back out. :)

You know this as well as I do - of all my other "hobbies" like ham
radio for example, you can leave them for a while and then come back
to them like old friends. But there's something about a boat, in
particular when it's one that you really like, that just sticks with
you.

I feel a rant coming on and I've got things to do. :)

See the movie Perfect Storm? The Hannah Boden has a single 385 hp Cat,
and is 100 feet long. Historically, most large ships are single
engine.
