My flight instructor was briefing me on emregency landings off-airport at
night. He gave the usual advice about turning off all electrical except
landing lights breaker, unlocking doors, etc., and then said: "When you
sense ground contact is imminent, turn on landing lights. If what you see
scares you, turn them off."
