Right is multi-directional - port means left at all times.

But if I'm on the bow looking aft... isn't "port" to my right? What if I'm
in the middle of the boat looking toward the starboard side... wouldn't port
then be behind me? ducking missle shot from the east

The port side is always the port side at any attitude - backwards,
forwards, sideways, upside down.

Right can be relative. For instance, if you are facing directly East,
you right is facing South. If you are facing North, your right is
facing East. In a boat, port is always on your left no matter where
the boat is pointing.
