Angels and demons and 'poppycock,' says Church
USA Today Branded cardinals. Slaughtered scientists. Impossible falls and improbable leaps -- of men and of faith. It could only be time for Angels & Demons, the Dan Brown book turned Ron Howard-Tom Hanks thriller. Anticipating that the movie might be controversial, I slogged through the book, including tedious speeches on religion and science (that I eventually started skimming because most were incomprehensible) and all five endings (just when you think it's over, you realize, oops, there are 50 more pages, or 40, or whatever). Now, however, I see the Catholic Church, which was mightily opposed to the earlier Bown/Howard outing, The Da Vinci Code, has written this off as inconsequential. Rather than challenging core beliefs of the church, like Code, A&D is a gory showdown between religion and science. (God wins). - - - As if the "core beliefs" of *any* religion stand up to scientific scrutiny. |
