Default Military Layoffs?

Just saw the Nat Guard is getting bloated with manpower.
Folks signing up for a job.
Have a SIL who just got back from Iraq and is about to enter OCS.
Hope he doesn't get laid off.

Yep. Military as employer of last resort. Predictable.

He's regular Army. Georgia for OCS, I think.
Him and the daughter are driving cross-country now.
His unit was based in Hawaii when she came down with thyroid cancer,
and now they're coming east.
She's cured, BTW. As much as you can be anyway.

Sorry to hear about the grandchild. Damn, that sucks.

He must be going to OCs at Fort Benning, just outside Columbus. Fort
Benning is the Infantry training center, but I think it's the only
place that does OCS now. I went through it at Fort Belvoir, but that
was back in '66 when almost each branch had its own OCS. It will be a
rough first couple months, but then things ease up a bit. I sure hope
he can put up with harrassment, if it's still allowed. Hell, maybe
five pushups at a time is the max now.

Daughter. But we're all over that now. She'll have to take thyroid
meds forever now though. We should all be happy to be alive and
kicking.

I'll be talking to him soon, and let you know. Yeah, he's Infantry.
I'll warn him about the hazing, but I imagine he knows what to expect.
All I need from you is a good word to the General in charge over there
so he can good tee times. But I don't think he golfs, so I'll come up
with something else when I find out what he needs.

Harry, I have to ask. Why do you hold such disdain for the very people
that protect your fat, nasty lazy, lying worthless ass? You do realize
that everything you have and every freedom you have is directly tied
to those who've protected this country don't you? Or are you so stupid
that you don't realize that?

I reenlisted for six years right before I went in. It provided a hell
of an incentive when I lay in bed at night thinking, "Why am I doing
this ****?"

They put a stop to that reenlistment practice right after that.

Fort Benning is having some kind of Ranger contest soon, open to the
public to watch them. Or maybe it's already passed. Heard it on the
radio

Yup, it's also the home of Airborne and Ranger training. Vic, your SIL
would do well to sign up for both. (If you're listening.)
