Friday, I am picking up a boat I bought. It is a Lund with a 40 Merc. It
has the Oil Injection. I was told by a parts man that they started
manufacturing those in 1995. The boat is older than that, but in pretty
decent shape, being garaged. The boat is at a distance from me right now.
I did take it to water and fired it up, and it ran good, and the pump had a
strong jet of water coming out.

Can anyone give me a heads up about this motor. I know that I can get the
mfr. date off the main frame, and it will tell me. I did not know this when
I tested the boat, but read it after. But, I went and got three plugs for
it, and now I see pictures of it with four cylinders. I had a 40 Merc short
shank years ago in the seventies, and IIRC, it had three cylinders.

Google is a maze of sites and info, and not knowing the specific month of
manufacture, nor having the boat close enough to run and check it has me at
a disadvantage.

Can anyone give me general info on this motor from what I've provided?

remote key electric start and standard Merc controls.

Also, when I get it home, is it advisable to use a 55 gallon of water to
start and run it in just to check it out? Just how much user serviceability
is there? Carb jets? I am mechanical, and once pulled the top end off a
Evinrude 60 that had sucked a SS washer into a cylinder. Had it repaired,
and reassembled it.

Is there a place online to buy a manual without paying an arm and a leg?

If it is a '95, it is a four-banger.

It's the same engine Yamaha used to "brand" and sell as its own.

West Marine has a service manual for it for under $40:

I don't know anything about the engine's "innards." I would change the

Thanks. I have so much enjoyed owning boats at different times in my life.
I had a recent windfall, and decided to put a wanted ad on craigslist. A
guy called, and he just wanted it out of his garage. It has clear paper,
and he wanted $1500. I paused about two seconds and said okay.

Gonna send off for the manual, and wait for that before I fire it up again.
The grandboys are gonna love it, and I'm going to also. It's a deep vee
with flat floors and a good layout.

I didn't think to ask. Maybe there's a manual in one of the lockers.
Anyway, I'll know Friday.

Oil injection systems were controversial and problematic on some of the
Evinrude engines but you don't hear of many issues on the Merc engines. I
had an old, late 80's vintage 70hp Evinrude with the oil injection system
(in fact I recently re-acquired it and the boat it is on). I had it
rebuilt 10 years ago and it still works and runs fine.

Can't help with much info on your engine however. If you are not familiar
with them, one of the best places around here for parts, manuals and
accessories is Monahan's Marine in Weymouth.

Dave wants the serial number because that is the key to the kingdom on
Mercs. You can't really even order parts without it and lots of other
things may or may not be true depending on SN.
Every other indication is just a hint about what you have.

Pretty much got that. I know I was asking a very general question. I have
owned premix outboards in the past, and this is the first auto oiler. IIRC,
the 40 I had before (woulda been a '70 or so) had three holes. Going to
pick it up Friday, and just wanted some ideas on what I will see. First
thing is to clean it up good, and check the obvious. Will wait for SN to
order manual, and get date of mfr. from engine.

Nothing like ordering parts for the right year and model. ;-)

who does side work, or who knows about them. I usually try to trade welding
work.

I'm the person that posted the pic of the boat caught on Google Earth
while powerloading in Weymouth.

You are right about Monahan's though. They had some parts for my old
Load-Rite trailer that a Load-Rite dealer told me he couldn't get!
