SPRINGFIELD, Va., Feb 11 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on
Wednesday that Caterpillar Inc's (CAT.N) chief executive has said he
would be able to rehire some of the company's 20,000 laid-off workers if
Congress passes an $800 billion economic stimulus plan.

Speaking at the site of a highway construction project in Virginia,
Obama noted that the heavy equipment machinery giant had announced some
20,000 layoffs in the past few weeks as a result of the global economic
crisis.

"Today, the chairman and CEO of Caterpillar said that if the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Plan passes, his company would be able to
rehire some of those employees," said Obama. The president is scheduled
to visit a Caterpillar plant in East Peoria, Illinois, on Thursday.

To do what? Build heavy equipment that no one is buying?

Are you really that simple? A big piece of the plan is INFRASTRUCTURE.
That means fixing and building bridges, roads and other big stuff that
will require heavy equipment.

Infrastructure does not produce long term jobs. You can't keep pulling
money out of the economy and put it into infrastructure projects because
one day you will have no one to use the infrastructure. And, no more
economy to pull more money from.

Yeah, but it does produce jobs. Building and maintaining infrastructure
is a fundamental role of government, and one that we have been ignoring
of late. A lot of this stimulus package are projects the government
should be doing anyway.

Congress and Obama are working their hardest to make the recession last
longer with this "stimulus" bill. Obama with his pessimistic, gloom and
doom attitude isn't doing much to lead the country forward. He's got
everyone scared, hoarding cash and staying home. All the wrong things.
Congress sees this as an opportunity to fund pet projects to stimulate

In Connecticut, many administrations in the past 40 years (mostly
republican) simply ignored infrastructure in order to appear to have a
balanced budget. Does "Mianus River Bridge" ring a bell? It should.

Deferred maintenance always comes back to bite you, and the eventual
cost is much higher than if it had been done when it was supposed to
be done.

Connecticut currently has MAJOR bridges that are in extremely poor
condition. Big chunks of concrete falling off, pins rusted through,
etc. Been that way for a LONG time. The current Governor (another
Rethuglican) hasn't done anythng to change that situation. She doesn't
want to fix bridges if it interferes with her imaginary "balanced
budget"

That would be the Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota solution...wait until the
bridge falls into the river.

No, but it may stave off this recession becoming a depression.

Congress and Obama are working their hardest to make the recession
last longer with this "stimulus" bill. Obama with his pessimistic,
gloom and doom attitude isn't doing much to lead the country
forward. He's got everyone scared, hoarding cash and staying home.
All the wrong things. Congress sees this as an opportunity to fund
pet projects to stimulate their re-election campaign contributions.

Obama is dishing out reality.

Obama is a poor leader. Since taking office he has inspired no one.
In fact his mis-handling of his cabinet nominees has left most
wondering if he is up to the task of being president.

Sorry, bozo, but your opinions and those on your side of the fence are

Legislators, bureaucrats and judges should be in jail.
Shouldn't you be asking that question of George Bush? He's the man who
was in charge the past eight years. Obama has only been President for 3

I was an asshole when Clinton was in office too.

Yeah, we get that.
