Latching up to trailer

http://i40.tinypic.com/14jlv1g.jpg Sometimes there is a simple solution to a pain in the neck process. When trying to align a car or truck to a trailer ball without an assistant you can set up a mirror to watch the ball and hitch as you are backing up. Look at the above pictures. |

Latching up to trailer
Only works if you can see it. My tow is a conversion van; the small rear
windows are too high up to see the ball and hitch. I use a V shaped metal guide that mounts around the ball. It's about 12" wide facing the coupler. I find it easy to get lined up that close so that as I back up the coupler is guided towards the ball. You just have to remember to pull forward an inch or so after making contact, so that the coupler can be lowered over the ball and the pawl will slide down and under the ball to be latched. I like it :-) I'll have to make up a jig for my boat trailer. |

Obviously mirror alignment is critical. |

Damn, where were you a month ago when I posted a picture of mine? I caught a ration of crap 'cause I used duct tape to hold it on. It works well though! Here's a picture of it before I added the duct tape. It's an extension mirror sold by auto parts stores for trailer towing. Cheap. http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l2...ilerMirror.jpg -- John H * Some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them. * |
