Default Skype Scam

Slate has an article extolling Skype. However, whenever someone calls
me on Skype I almost always can tell due to the poor sound quality so
I tell them to hang up and call me back on a real phone. If they have
a real reason to talk to me they can pay to use a real phone.

Interesting. I was considering Skype to cut down on my Comcast bill.
One guy has the phone connected to his router, so you don't need the
PC on. Expensive phone though.
Never heard the sound quality was that bad.

I don't know if it's Skype or not, but my son has his phone routed
though his computer and pays super cheap billing for all local, long
and foriegn calls , the problem that I've found is that when he calls
me, the clarity is fine, but I ahve to constantly remind him to speak
directly into the phone mouthpiece because the signal volume is really
low.

I'm sort of hard of hearing (too much heavy metal when i was younger)
and I have my phones cranked up as high as I can, and I still have a
problem hearing him, that is when he's on his computer set up. But on
his cell phone, he's loud and clear.

Skype works so good, and is so inexpensive, that I can't believe it's still
legal.

We have VOIP for personal use, but I would never use it for business,
I think it sounds cheap...

Skype is free, so you get what you pay for. I've a friend in St.
Petersburg, Russia and one in the Netherlands, both of whom I frequently
talk with. I've never had a problem. Lately I've been conversing with
another friend in LA, CA, again with no problem.

But, I've not tried calling a land line with Skype. Maybe that's where the
problem comes in. It may be like VOIP, which usually has a bunch of extra
static in the line - not horrible, but there and a little bothersome.

There are several reasons why Skype could be assailed legally and be shut
down. Ebay, being the owner of Skype, is probably the main reason why it's
still operational.

Back to your connection- I'm on FIOS with a 20 Mbps Up/Down connection
speed, Skype is crystal clear and better than a normal landline.
You- you live in the sticks don't you?

He may have VOIP. Ask him. I had it with a company that went under, and
have not started up again with another company. But, I was paying only $199
per year. Here's some info on VOIP: http://www.fcc.gov/voip/

Here's a place that provides 'reviews' of different companies. Remember,
the reviews are free!

I'll probably try them out again in a year or so. I'm assuming they'll get
most of the bugs out by then. My neighbor uses it and complains very
little.
