Pray tell me how do you install it incorrectly?

Plug it in and that's it.

Make sure the cabling is secure and not stressed. etc. etc.

I have installed it correctly.

Airmar no longer makes these transducers and the woman who answered my
email was less than no help!

Probably due to incorrect installation. Airmar makes a lot of
transducers and most of them are pretty solid.
