I will try the trick above with the VHF radio, thanks for the clue! I

I use the millitech splitter. It is designed using a pin diode in a
half wavelength splitter. It actually does protect the AIS receiver
from the VHF Tx.

That is what I thought but it turns out very little of it is used
here. I know for a fact the tugs / barges don't use it which annoys
me to all get out since that is why I got it. There may be some
shipping using it in the Newport area shipping channel, but I haven't
gotten that far yet to try.

The statement that "tugs / barges don't use it" isn't true. I've seen
quite a few tugs that do have AIS transponders. They may not be required
to use it, but some do.
