So far I have never seen an AIS contact, I am beginning to wonder if the unit even works. It is a millitech SR161. Has anyone seen a contact in this area? I have not yet tried to get an AIS receiver working but virtually all commercial shipping is transmitting AIS info these days, and there is a *lot* of commercial shipping on Long Island Sound - tankers, tugs, freighters, etc. If you are within visual sight, you should be receiving a signal if everything is OK. That is what I thought but it turns out very little of it is used here. I know for a fact the tugs / barges don't use it which annoys me to all get out since that is why I got it. There may be some shipping using it in the Newport area shipping channel, but I haven't gotten that far yet to try. Bob |

I've seen quite a few tugs that do have AIS transponders. They may not be required to use it, but some do. -- Geoff |
