I am replacing the Hitachi LR155-20 alternator on my Yanmar 3GM30 with
a Balmar unit. Can anyone tell me what the T-shaped 2 wire plug on
the old alternator is for? I assume its for the tach. Its a t-shaped
plug labeled 'R' and 'L'. The wires are red and orange or brown, its
kind of hard to tell.

I don't think it's the tach. My 3gm30 reads the tach signal off the
flywheel, I think. Definitely not the alternator, anyway. From
memory, you should have alternator positive output wired to the
solenoid with a surprisingly small guage wire, alternator gnd wired
to the preferred ground on the back of the engine, a field power
supply wire, and an alarm wire that leads to the panel. I suspect
your plug is the field supply and the alarm. If you like, take a look
