Default Installing hull lights?

It's winter here in wonderful Wisconsin. My boat is stored away, but
I'm dreaming of the day when the ice melts and I can get back out and
do some boating. I fish at night quite a bit and would like to
install some hull lights to make nighttime docking easier. I have
never made any electrical modifications to my boat and am not that
familiar with the realm of 12V modifications. I'm just looking for
some tips on where to get some information (a good site perhaps) and
how I can determine what the maximum ability of my electrical system
would be. I have a 18' Four Winns Fish n' Ski that has two batteries.
We also take the boat out for the July 4th party on the lake. Lots
of people light up their boats and I'd also need to consider
electrical capacity for that. Also, after looking through the
Overtons catalog I'm wondering how I can be sure that the angle on the
hull lights would be suitable for the hull of my boat. Are they
pretty much universal? Any recommendations on a durable brand?
Thanks for any help!

Hi werlax,

take a look at a netherland`s page. Don`t worry, its in english:
http://boten.nl/motoren/motoren_pdf/12volthandbook.pdf

Here you can read a lot about 12 Volt installation. On http://boten.nl You
find more informations about engines, alternators and so on.

Much fun while reading, and waiting for the start of boating season

Thanks much for the link. I've downloaded it to my laptop and will be
reading it during my down time. A quick glance and I think it's just
the thing I need to get started.
Thanks for your help!

just remember it is not legal to have lights on like head
lights while you are under way. The only light that you can
have on are the running(red &green) while underway. You can
use while lights for docking but not until you are close in
to the dock. No head lights on boats

Thanks. I think this would fall under the 'common sense' rule.
Unfortunately we don't see much of that anymore and we end up having
rules like 'Don't burn yourself on this scalding hot coffee'. I want
to strictly use them for docking and had considered a handheld
floodlight. I thought it'd be more convenient to not have to store
away the lantern with the limited storage I have. Besides, I thought
it'd just be kind of cool too... and isn't that what's most important?

Right on. Any fool would be able to figure out that any
white light in you eyes at nigh would end your night vision.
Don't let the CG see you with any thing but the normal
running lights on unless you are docking. Boots USCGA

In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the
world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.
