1989 Bayliner 16', First Boat!

The problem does not occur all the time but if I shut my engine off
and then try to restart it after being out on the water it will not
turn over. During this time none of my gauges take any kind of
measurement but my trim on my throttle will still work so I know it is
not the battery. I think it is either a bad starter or a lose
conection wire from the throttle to the dash-board.

Any ideas that might help, thank you in advance.

Get someone to crank it when hot and measure the voltage at the starter
motor terminals (the 'heavy' ones). Could be a faulty starter, be aware that
the voltage will be about 9 to 10v when cranking. If the volts are there but
it will not crank likely it needs reconditioning, this is probably and old
engine ??

Neutral lockout switch? If the shifter is not in neutral (or the switch is broken or
mis-aligned) the ignition will be cutoff.

do you have 12 volts on the + side of the coil with the switch on? If not
you have a voltage supply problem. Could be some corrosion or a loose
connection. You need to trace the voltage when it's not working or you will
be spending money on parts that you are guessing are bad and could still
have the problem next time out. I'd say take a meter or a test light and
find out where the voltage stops next time. You will most likely be able to
fix it or at least jump it till you get the correct parts to fix.
