Anyone have experience with hull/deck/bulwark leaks on a Tayana 37?
I'm replacing/relocating chainplates, and have deduced that some of
the leaks are actually coming from the adjacent hull/deck seam, which
is INSIDE the Tayana bulwark.
I'm a little hesitant to start cutting a hole with a 5" holesaw and
see what I find inside...

The curator of the TOG (tayana Owners Group) newsletter is searching
back issues for me, but nothing yet.

Go to sailnet.com, then go to the 'email archives', list Tayana in the
box and bulwarks in the search box.

Many of the older TY37 suffer from simply the caulk falling out from
under the cap rail that covers the bulwarks. Many TY37 owners are now
switching from polysulphide (or worse - silicone) to a product called
"Silaprene". The hawse holes (3 per side) also need caulking. If
the leak is through the genoa track attachments - -- on the inboard
side of the bulwarks if you look very carefully at the gelcoat surface
you will see faint shadows of 3/4" 'plugs' that when removed will give
access to the undersurface bolting that holds the track in place, the
rest are simply screws.
If you have such leaks, you may need to drill into the underside of the
bulwarks at the lowest place and do some 'draining'.

Chainplates are another 'story' as if the chainplates have been leaking
for some time and water has gotten into the chainplate base .... there
is the possibility/probability of fairly severe weakening of the
chainplate base system. The chief symptom when you remove the teak
fascia over the chainplates will be 'rust blooms' surrounding the
chainplate attachment nuts/studs - evidence of 'crevice corrosion'
internal to the base due to the wet wood core inside the chainplate
base. If you apply approx. 25 ft.-lb. torque to the studs .... and
they break off, then you have discovered an ever growing problem with
TY37 of chainplate base rot. Again go to the email archives for the
Tayana email group at sailnet and do an archive search for:
chainplates.
