I have a 26' cruiser that spends most of its life on Lake Superior. We
like to anchor and explore sea caves, small rivers and the islands without a motor, but the mother ship doesn't have enough space to store real kayaks in a way that won't obstruct vision from the lower helm. Also we have storms that come up in the summer that will blow things away that aren't securely stowed somewhere. So I have come up with the idea of the inflatable kayak, some of which appear to be quite well made, particularily those made by Innova, AIRE, Graber, Apex and IBC. I have been advised not to get a self-bailing one, as they tend to be wetter and Lake Superior is often COLD. Any ideas out there about this topic? Capt. Jeff |

Jeff I have a Zodiac/Jumbo tramper, they used to be Metzler. I've had it for about 5 years and its served me well. Some of the heavy duty Sevylors look like good value for the money. http://www.zodiac.fr/Eng/jumbo/famil...?num_modele=24 http://www.paddlermagazine.com/issue...ticle_37.shtml Dennis |

It is hard to paddle because it "squirms". |

I've used the Stearns 1K-116 for a couple of years and have had them
abused by rocks in class 1 & 2 rapids without any damage. They bundle up into a suitcase sized bag and weigh about 38#. Also, their customer support is excellent - I damaged a seam in the outer cover through my own neglect and they replaced it without question within the warranty period. Don't leave a fully inflated boat on deck and in the Florida sun all day! |
