Fife Regatta
Went for a sail on my pal's 72-footer last Tuesday, the intention being to
watch the Fifers on their race from Rhu to Rothesay. We were on a big boat, but dwarfed by some of these old timers. Got some great pictures. See example at http://www.villagephotos.com/viewpub...p?id_=23036098 She is "Mariquita", 93' LOA, built 1911, Fairlie. Anyone fancy buying a new main for this little beauty? Dennis. |

Ah, back when sailors didn't think reefing was a big deal.

I just noticed that there is only one set of reef points on the picture in
your OP link. Of course, with a gaff rig, you can scandalize which is effectively a 50% sail reduction. If you look closely at that picture, you can see how many reef points are required with a cotton sail. Imagine tying and untying all those! You have to climb out on the boom to get at the outer ones. Many craft of the period had foot ropes on the outer boom. Imagine what the USCG cone heads who go around hassling people for sitting with their legs over the rail inside the lifelines on sailboat would think of that. -- Roger Long |

The jpeg makes counting the reef points quite a task, but on the print I did, I counted 46! 5 guys tying-in 9 reeflines each is still quite a job! Looks like she has slab reefing too, not roller. Lots more pictures on the website, but not by me! http://www.fiferegatta.com/ Dennis. |
