I'm getting ready to start my trip to Newfoundland/Nova Scotia. I keep
thinking that it would be really nice to have a hailer with a built in fog
horn. I've been off researching them and it appears that for the cost, I
may as well just get a new VHF which incorporates all of the features into
one unit and that is remotely controlable from the remote mic in the
cockpit.

I've been an Icom user all along, and am tempted to get the IC-M604, which
is basically the same form-factor as my current IC-M402. The thing that
really ****es me off is that the cables for the remote mic are different
than what I have in there now and it's a royal PIA to remove the old ones
and pull new ones. As a result I'm looking at different vendors.

I've always liked Standard Horizon and their model GX2360S seems to have
all of the functionality that I like at a better price ($295 vs $420).

Does anyone have any feedback on these units or suggestions for others?
How about the actual horn unit?

Also, I'll need a guard for the horn. Here's a picture that I have for the
foredeck light. Does anyone know where I can find these?

One feature I like on my separate hailer/automatic fog signal is the
ability to listen through the speaker. The speaker is up and away
from the sea and sail/engine noise, it is unobstructed if you're
hiding behind the dodger (or in my case pilot house) and it's
amplified. I don't know if the combined units can listen and if they
can listen if they can do so while monitoring the radio... Still, if
I were to do it again I'd get a combined unit and have two installed
vhf's.

I don't have any experience with what you're looking for but I have two
comments. First, I have always been impressed with SH equipment. Loonnng
battery life and straight-forward functionality. Second, you really seem to
have a nice setup... very clean looking.

I had a S.H. The cable came a part on the Remote Mic. H.S. told me that
I put the remote in the SUN. And the cable had know UV in it. They told
me to my another mic. ... So I buy and ICOM M-602.

Just goes to show how mileage varies!

The cable on my Standard Horizon remote mic also fell apart due to UV
exposure.

I e-mailed SH tech support and they dispatched a new remote mic to me,
across to the W side of the Pacific, for free!

Thanks for the pointer! I actually found it after my post. I was hoping
for a generic solution with varying sizes, but it appears that I'll have to
make it myself.

I've been trying to decide where to mount the hailer. I had wanted to
mount it just above by foredeck light, but after looking at the dimensions,
I don't want to have my tape-drive jib swinging past a 9"+ protrusion on a
regular basis, even if there is a guard.

So, I was thinking of mounting the hailer just above the jib box. I have a
7/8 rig. A person who used to commission Freedoms commented that he was
afriad that this was too high. I would have thought that the higher, the
better as the sound would carry further. Any thoughts?

How about putting it on the arch over the dorades? A decent speaker
is a heavy thing so putting it at the top of the mast might not be
ideal. But, I don't think there would be any problem with audibility
if installed up there even from low and close to the boat. These
things are quite loud.
