Small Printer for on or near the Nav Station??
I'm looking for recommendations for a small (inexpensive) color printer for
printing 'chartlets' from my digital chart program. It should also have the ability to self feed a few sheets at a time and the cost of Ink Tanks should be reasonable. Since I will want to store it out of the way while underway, it should be fairly simple to set up/take down.. 120vac is fine since it have a large inverter.. I assume there are some 'Travel Models' out there but I think I need a recommendation from someone who might have actually taken it boating or traveling.. With your recommendation, I will start my search.. Thanks, Steve s/v Good Intentions |

Thanks, Steve s/v Good Intentions I use an el-cheapo HP inkjet (3650 about $75, that was over a year ago, may be new model #'s and cheaper now), that most importantly, has folding paper trays that go inside the top cover so it's small and protected when I travel (only folded out when I need it). Used it to print local maps from my mapping program in RV's/Boats/Motels/Cars and Planes (run off a cig lighter type inverter), and have even used it when camping (that was just for fun and showing off, tent with a laptop and printer |

With your recommendation, I will start my search.. You really can't get much smaller than the Epsons. Their new ink (Durabright?) is fairly waterproof and will last much longer than the usual alternatives. As I recall, the Lexmark's color longevity was measured in days, HP a couple of months, the Epson up to 100 years, so there's a real difference. [Epson actually seems to stand up to exposure better than photographic prints.] The major cost in any ink jet printer is the ink, though. Not much you can do about it as they'll get their profit one way or the other. -- Jere Lull Xan-a-Deux ('73 Tanzer 28 #4 out of Tolchester, MD) Xan's Pages: http://members.dca.net/jerelull/X-Main.html Our BVI FAQs (290+ pics) http://homepage.mac.com/jerelull/BVI/ |

Small Printer for on or near the Nav Station??
Did a eBay search and there are about 50 New In Box and the prices look like
I could have one for around $30 plus shipping. (of course most want $20 S/H) I guess I'll watch for the seller who doesn't want to get rich on the S/H. Thanks Steve s/v Good Intentions |

Here's the HP: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en...267-81913.html Here's the Canon: http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?...4003_SK_579007 I need to get one too, so I'd also appreciate comments on the printers. (of course most want $20 S/H) I guess I'll watch for the seller who doesn't want to get rich on the S/H. Having sold stuff on eBay (including some sailing magazines), $20 shipping ***IS NOT*** going to make the seller get rich. The idea is to not lose money on shipping, not to make money on shipping. The only time I wasn't just barely breaking even on shipping was when something was light enough that I could send it first class. A 15 pound parcel going across the country from Maryland to California costs $22.64, not counting tracking or insurance or anything like that. If the seller has a fixed shipping cost, they've probably calculated how much it will cost from one end of the country to the middle. Then if they are on the east coast and it has to be sent to Hawaii, they will lose a lot of money on the deal, and if they only have to send it to the next state, they'll make a little money on the deal. People seem to like the fixed cost thing best, but it's a crapshoot for the seller. Otherwise the buyer has to wait for the seller to figure the cost of postage or figure it themselves, and some buyers are too impatient to do that. Also buyers such as yourself seem to have an unrealistic idea of what shipping costs. UPS costs more in a lot of cases BTW. Plus - postage isn't all of the cost. In most cases, I have to pay for shipping materials etc. Buyers don't seem to like to pay for handling either, but I see no reason why I should work for free for someone who is getting a bargain. In any case - we have a Brother 7300 multipurpose machine (printer, fax, copier, scanner) which we bring on the boat. It's not tiny, but it is fairly simple to set up, and when we are at home, we bring it home and use it there. The copier function is useful but we don't use the fax much on the boat. grandma Rosalie |
